Why is UW such a different team at home?
Geez I really wonder.
Because they're more comfortable there? Every team gets home calls, for some reason on this board we decide that it happens more often there and ignore times like last week when Oregon shoots 3x more free throws than UW.
We rely on the refs more than UW does with DWill. This would never be an argument if Pac-10 referees were competent in any way. I can't even watch Pac-10 games other than Arizona anymore because I don't need to pull my hair out over teams I don't care about.

Well...there 3s tend to drop more at home too, where on the road they don't fall as easily. Plus, for some odd reason Monty continues to play zone against a team that shoots very well. To be "fair" they stomped CAL on the road too so this isn't surprising.

Cal was never going to win this game. Short rotation coming off a 3 OT game where everyone played 50+ minutes going to the toughest house in the PAC 10 against a team coming off three straight losses.

Guy on Bruins Live compared Josh Smith to Kevin Love, based on how Smith has been playing lately.
Clearly he didnt see Love play.
After the comment, the other guy essentially laughed at him and gave 3 reasons why its not even close within 10 seconds.

Yup. . .fouls were kind of wierd though. 15 on Cal and 29 on Udub with Udub only having 7 (made 6) attempts from the line. Cal had 37. No players fouled out though. . .
Then of course there are those 30 freaking assists Udub put on the stat board. Fuh.

Should have kept his cool, but there wasn't a need to make that foul that hard at that point. Altman apoligized for the foul and Howland told him that we shouldn't have tried to shoot the ball. Much ado about nada

Yeah, blah night of hoops. That's, what, 50 points UW has beaten Cal by in two games. Might want to slow it down, Monty. Can't run with that team. Plus, running negates Kamp/S-F.

As much as I've praised Alabama, I was surprised that turned out to be such a good one. The Portland/Pepperdine game turned out to be pretty exciting but other than that, trying to cover UCLA -9 and Oregon State +11 was as good as it got. Saturday should be better.

I don't rip UCLA players, so I don't really pay attention to how other fans rip into their own. Kinda defeat the purpose of being a fan of that particular program.
Hell, even Venoy O gets a lot of respect from me for how hard he plays on defense.:)

02-12-2011, 07:40 PM
Lol...seriously? They scored 6 points against UCLA in those 15 seconds. Howland called off the dogs and Robinson kept pressing and UCLA couldn't advance the ball more then 15 feet. Since robinson wanted to play howland needed his starters back in
TucsonDon
02-12-2011, 08:44 PM
That whole thing wasn't smooth. Fitting end to a weird/crappy game.
There are some very odd things in that box score...things you rarely see like one team w/more offensive rebounds than defensive boards; a team turning it over 26 times but winning handily (score not indicative of that); winning team takes 31 less shots than the opposition; winning team w/3 less blocked shots than FG's made; losing team w/eight more missed FGA's than the winning team had total FGA's. There were also three players (two starters) foul out with over six minutes left in the game.
As for the ending, UCLA had pulled up on a 3-on-1 break that would've been a dunk w/1:30 remaining. That was the right thing to do, IMO, as was Howland pulling his guys. I don't really have a problem with Robinson doing what he did because it's not right that Howland should be able to dictate when the game is over, but it was a little odd that he didn't take his guys out and then continued to press. Don't know if people have noticed but Howland doesn't take much to chance; conservative guy made a conservative decision bringing his guys back in. Didn't see the whole thing as a big deal although the handshake wasn't too loving.

Key thing for UCLA was not having a bad loss at home, they held serve against the easiest road combo in the league. Real test comes on the road and against Arizona.

UCLA has pretty much held serve throughout the entire season. I don't think I've been surprised by a UCLA result this year outside of perhaps the Washington game @ Pauley. I expect UCLA to go 3-3 down the stretch in its final six regular season games, win in the first round at Staples and then who knows? That'll be enough to finish in the top three of the league and get into the tournament.

I've been to Galen once, and it was so empty that you could actually hear the players speaking to one another. Pauley's even worse.
This whole Farmer's stadium story has people excited for pro football's return to L.A., but it sounds like there's some uncertainty about where the stadium should go. Next to Staples, or City of Industry.
Anyway, I shouldn't knock the entire state. I'm sure places like SDSU, LBSU, and even St. Mary's have pretty good turn outs at their home games. It's just funny that UCLA and USC -- two of the oldest, most prestigious schools in the state -- cannot generate more enthusiasm for their men's hoops programs. There was more fan support for UCLA when Lavin was here.

While I am not going to defend the other things to do in Tucson, LA also is the 2nd largest city in the country and there are tons of UCLA grads all over SoCal.

Also, notice that most fans of UCLA sports -- especially those who are active on this site -- never actually attended let alone graduated from that school. Most UCLA students are far more interested in their GPAs than in Howland losing to Montana. Most UCLA fans on this site never finished college and know more about Josh Smith than Adam Smith.

who are you talking about? i for one definitely attended and graduated from UCLA, BSEE 1992. which poster didnt attend UCLA? not that there's anything at all wrong with being a UCLA bball fan while not having actually attended the school.
as for UCLA students being more interested in their GPA's than in UCLA bball, i totally agree with you. of the 40ish UCLA grads listed as friends on my facebook page, i count two who are fball season ticket holders, zero who are bball season ticket holders, and one who has actually attended a bball game this year.
is there something wrong with caring more about your GPA? i mean, the word UNIVERSITY is kinda prominent in the word UCLA, or UA for that matter. i'm kinda proud that the average UCLA student/alum would know more about Adam Smith than Joshua Smith.

No, mike, caring about your GPA is absolutely more important. It's just that UCLA's fanbase, on this site, is predominantly represented by people (you being the exception) who never attended or graduated from UCLA, so clearly these are UCLA fans whose academic profile never merited admission to the school they root for. You'd think that with a school so widely known for academics, their fans would study hard enough to actually go there.
And yes, even among UCLA alums, interest in football and basketball is fairly mild. Part of this has to do with UCLA being located in a town where Lakers and USC football are typically kings. But part of this has to do with UCLA alums being more interested in their careers than in a game they're not playing in.
