3 weeks away so it's about time we got the game thread kicked off. Thinking we will look pretty vanilla given the game we have in Stillwater the next week.

Still I think we handle the Jacks convincingly 34-9. Can't wait to hear from Cogent with his comments.......about the scoreboard

To me, line play will be key in the victory.

I have no doubt Arizona will win, but the linebackers and O-linemen are the key to how much. They need to attack and keep attacking the whole game.

It was like that to me with our '87-88 hoops team. Sure, the first game was just Duquesne, but the 133-78 final sent a very clear signal that big things were to come.

I hope the NAU game is more 34 and less 9 that way.

Seeing as we're gonna throw a ton this year (although I do believe we will run a "decent" amount in this particular game) I think Arizona puts up more than 35 against the Lumberjacks. And I'd also like to think we'd hold them to below 14, but we'll see.


Thoughts on our first-game unis? I just hope we don't wear all red with white helmets. I'll say all blue, or if not, then the same combo we wore against Ok St. last year. *with nau wearing some blue though, I'm sure I'll end up being completely wrong and we'll go with red*:lol2:

I'll delve into the fray, azcat 49.

First off, I'm looking forward to Saturday. Apart from the random obnoxious frat guy @ tailgating and a few of the frothing-at-the-mouth masses from your south endzone, I've had pretty positive times @ NAU sporting events in Tucson. The fans sitting nearby last year for the mens hoops game were great to talk to and tolerated my jumping up and down with a smile. Supposed to meet up with a high school friend/UA alum to wander through the tailgates before the game next Saturday.

Re: what happens on the field. Some may view this as a "body bag" game to line the NAU athletic department coffers. In a way, it is. But NAU tends to make a game of it in the first half vs. UA and ASU and finds ways to compete. Running out of fumes at the end of the 3rd/4th quarters seems to be the story in the end with the Pac 10, err 12's (keep forgetting this), speed and depth catching up.

From a fan's perspective, it's all gravy. The Jacks have nothing to lose, apart from injuries, as they are expected to lose by everyone but themselves. If they take the same attitude that NAU's basketball did last November in Tucson, ya never know what could happen. The U of A has strenths but is untested on quite a few fronts. Will the memory of last year's five game end of the season lull from last season carry over for UA? NAU lost a LOT on defense from last season but have some talent back. Special teams and running backs look to be solid from all that I've read. Lots of youth and question marks for the Jacks as well.

We had a nice little chat about the state of the O-Line, the trial-by-fire schedule they're facing to start the season, and just general overall football talk.

I feel that bad aim(which isn't really technique to me) can be corrected, where as bad technique(read: super low trajectory) can not.

That kick wasn't even close. Never had a chance. Can't win close games later in the season without a kicking game and special teams game.

Two FG attempts: one horrible snap and one horrible kick. 6 points lost.

So our saying then that a 46 yard field goal should be guaranteed? How far away until a field goal is not guaranteed?

You can talk about the bad snap all you want and I will agree, but this missing a 45+ field goal is not end of the world and happens most often. I guarentee you that anything past 45 is around 20% made college wide. Heck its probably worse.

Come one people, no need to blow this out of proportion. It was missed but it was actually straight kick, he was just on the right hash mark. Its not like he has missed a PAT. Heck it was a 46 yarder, how often is a 46 yarder hit?

Some of you guys really have some blown up expectations.

He took over the job from a guy who made 75% of his FGs last season. A guy who was picked #2 by several outlets for All Pac-12 this year. So...yeah, expectations for his replacement are high.

Missing it like Salazar did, is. He had a good snap and a solid hold. He just kicked it entirely the wrong way.

High schoolers and amateur kickers like us have misses like that. D-1 kickers should be held to a slightly higher standard.
