He certainly deserves a call up

So does half the Twins minor league roster. Restovich, and Morneau specifically. The Twins are baffling. They have a half dozen DH/1B types that are either in the majors or should be, yet they give Mientkiewicz a 2 year deal for over 5 mil/season. Oh yeah, they let David Ortiz walk as well. Why the hell does Jose Offerman have a job on this team? They should've dumped Jones, and Minky for whatever they could've gotten for them, and given the kids a chance. I have to think the Pickering thing is a fluke, but even if he deserves a chance, they won't give it to him.

Jesse Crain should be closing for the Twins right now.

My Twins are going to take it all this year. Mientkiewicz saves them a lot on defense, but they need some more power in the lineup.

There's nothing more overrated than 1B defense. Mientkiewicz saves them some runs, but he costs them many more with his offense. I don't see the Twins winning it all, but their division will be exciting with the Sox, and a much improved Royals.

Crain is going to be a stud. I agree he should be in the bigs, but I don't think he's ready to close yet.

defense on the whole is overrated in baseball. Much more important aspects are pitching and hitting.

I have to disagree Morgan. Look at the Yankees this season and you will see what a crappy defense will get you. There have already been 4 or 5 errors that have lost them games this year (two by ARod).

you can disagree, but you will be wrong! ;)

If A-Rod were hitting better he would be more then making up for defensive mistakes. The Yanks aren't hitting yet, but they will.

No doubt their hitting will come around, but I would have to say that they have the worst defense in the American League. They have arguably 5 position players that should be DHing. Their whole outfield can't run or throw and their corner infielders leave something to be desired. The only current gold glover on the team is playing out of position. There will be quite a few games this year where it will come down to an outfielder running down a ball and making a good play or an infielder making a crucial out. My point is that defense is important, especially when you have a pitching staff that is older and relies on making batters put the ball in play. Mussina is still a strikeout guy, but the rest of the staff need the fielders to make plays behind them. Imagine how much it is going to cut down on their effectiveness if they have to throw more pitches per inning because their fielders can't get to balls and make tough outs.

By the way, I have been a Yankee fan ever since I can remember, but when you grow up in the suburbs north of NYC, it's just expected of you. But I have to say that I really hate how this team was put together.

I can't name all 5. Giambi, Bernie, Matsui, and maybe Sheff, but while Jeter is a bad SS, I think he could be an excellent 2B. It's really too bad that he's so selfish. There defense would be much better with him at 2B, ARod at SS, and Koskie or some other 3B that'll be available at some point this season. As of now, I'd bet they wind up getting Vidro to help shore up 2B so that'll help the D some. Beltran may be in CF before the season is over too, although I certainly hope not. I agree though, it definitely doesn't look like this team was put together with any plan in mind other than getting every decent available player they could.

Sabremetrics will tell you mathmatically Defense is overrated. I agree that the Yanks D sucks. I don't think it matters as they will still win 95-100 games.

I'll take a good pitching staff over anything.
I'm trying to be optimistic about my Twins so I had to mention their defense.

I'm a moron that needs to read closer. I thought Pickering was in Minnesota's farm system for some reason. Sorry for hijacking your thread.

The Royals finally called up Pickering today and he hit a Grand Slam in his 1st AB.

Pick him up on your fantasy team!
