Ben Sheets struck out 18 Braves today, including the final 6 batters of the game. Granted, Atlanta started 5 players who should have been playing for the Durham Braves, but the way Sheets finished was unbelievable.

Kerry Woods' 20 K performance against the Astros and Pedro's six innings of relief against Cleveland in the playoffs are the top two pitching outings I've ever seen.
Sheets was amazing today, though. He was still hitting 97 on the gun in the 9th today.

Sheets was unbelievable today. He got stronger as the game went on.
Wood's game may have been the best ever. Only an infield single kept him from perfection. His stuff was soooo nasty that game. The Astros were not even close to hitting him.

Clemens first 20 K versus the Mariners in 1986. I can't show a ticket stub on the net but I was in the bleachers.

I could have sworn Rocket's 20 K's came against the Brewers and Gorman Thomas?? I know his second one was against the Tigers.

I saw Clemens pitch at Fenway in '86. Don't remember too much except that he got rocked and it was super hot.

Gorman Thomas was the DH for the Mariners that day. Some others of the top of my head.

I can't believe this thread is not blowing up with Randy Johnson talk.
Paging the six Diamondbacks fans that are left . . . anyone out there?

It's at least in the top 17.

Striking out 18 batters is more impressive than hurling a perfect game. Imagine that Cintron hadn't made that fine play on the slow roller to SS, Randy would have settled for a 1-hitter, and his performance may not have even cracked the top 100 of all time.

ESPN did a list of the top 10 pitching performances in the last 25 years (the ESPN era):

I'd have to put Randy's at #2. No hits, no walks, 1 3-ball count, the closest to a hit was an infield dribler by the pitcher, and maybe about 3 balls that were solidly hit all game (I'm just going off memory here and what was described on the radio- I'd have to watch the game again to get a more accurate count on this).

I totally disagree that sriking out 18 or even 20 is more impressive then a perfect game. You can have almost zero control like (Clement or Wood) and strike out multiple batters. To have your stuff be that good and be able to have complete control is remarkable.

Don't worry guys, JJ's just a total hater when it comes to the Dbacks and his beloved Braves. He has zero objectivity with his opinion on Randy's perfecto, which was as good as any of us will EVER see.
that was the most amazing pitching performance i have ever seen.
i watched the entire game and was having heartattacks everytime the joneses came to bat.
great great outting from a 40 year old man. 1 3 ball count? are u freaking serious, and he did it against a powerful team. not that they have been this season but still theyhave some bigtime batters
