View Full Version : Good strategy or Grady Little-esque?

Everyone we were watching the game with tonight at Hidden Valley Inn sure thought it was far from a smart move to leave Meloan on the hill for the ninth, especially after he walked the guy. 142 pitches? Are you kidding me? At that point you take the guy out the first time he throws back to back balls.

Lopez was very close to looking like Grady.

The two-strike bunt attempt was embarrassing, too. Andy Lopez made a lot of great moves today and in the series but those two nearly made him the goat.

Thank GOD Arizona won so Jason Donald didn't have to live with the Buckner-like between-the-legs gaffe.

Also, you gotta love the spontaneous bandwagon effect. It's why sports are so great. Nobody (and I mean nobody) but maybe Irish27 could name five players on the team as of two weeks ago and now all anyone can talk about is "No-Neck", Big Mo, Mr. Freshman All-America and UA's young and talented pitching staff.

Talk about out of nowhere. This may be as good as it gets for quite some time baseball fans.

For some of us, it has been a long time coming. I used to go to the games whenever I could. I saw the 1980 team, the 1986 team and whichever team it was that Long Beach State knocked out of the regional in Tucson. (I will never get the chant "Let's go Beach" out of my head). The team has been, frankly bad, for a long time. And anyone who would have predicted this result would have been called crazy a couple of weeks ago.

But this is nice and it is especially nice that it is Long Beach State we did this to at their house.

I liked the decision to have Meloan start the 9th but after he allowed one runner on I would have pulled him. Kid pitched his heart out and you gotta give him the ball to start the 9th at least.

Thank god for the Angels brass getting all over the Beach coach for running Weavers count up to 137 on Friday, or we probably would have seen him last night in extras.

I am a complete bandwagoner at this point. I mean, I haven't paid attention to college baseball at all in the last 15 years or so. Or maybe 12 years. Since I graduated from UA, anyway. I didn't even know we'd made it to the Super Regional until this past Friday afternoon! Oops. But I watched the game Friday night, and kept close look at the scores while we played Saturday and Sunday (Had LSU-Texas-A &M game up here). At least I got to see the game last night from the 7th inning on (just in time to see a great 2-out rally by the Cats to grab the lead).

I don't have high hopes or expectations at all about how we'll do in Omaha, but hey.. we're there, aren't we? And with only 35 wins. That's gotta be close to a record for least wins making the CWS.

And I agree with CJ that Lopez should have pulled Maloen (sp) after he gave up the single. Period. Game probably wouldn't have went extra innings.

I think CJ's take is right on the mark.

Our bullpen is not the best. I think it was a good move having him start the 9th, obviously I think Lopez waited one batter too long to take him out, but it shows how much confidence he has in Meloan.
