View Full Version : Arizona at Stanford ("Nick Robinson's Bane")
Ben Hansen
01-08-2005, 02:24 PM
Stanford scrub Nick Robinson is going to get some payback today as the luckiest man on earth who hit a 30-footer at the buzzer to beat Arizona last year has been exposed as nothing more than a role player this year.
I didn't do a full preview for the game but here's my prediction.
Arizona 80, Stanford 72.

01-08-2005, 02:31 PM
Ben,
IMHO, your prediction is too close. I expect AZ by 10+... possibly 15+.
Stanford w/o CH.... it could get very ugly.
SnowCat
01-08-2005, 02:32 PM
'Furd is 6-7, 0-3. Why does that make this game scarier than if they were 12-1?
Oh well. 10 game win streak if we win this one.

I will never again predict a blowout against Stanford... :(

why is this game not on Fox. I've seen commercials for it all week on the east coast. Beyond the glory is showing right now. Anyone on the east know why this is? It should be on Comcast like Thursdays game.

Stanford is cleaning up the boards, but can't keep up with our D. Hernandez is on the bench right now. 'cats need to take advantage.

'cats need to pick up the perimeter D. Stanford is trying to be physical, setting hard picks.

Where is the defense today guys?
SnowCat
01-08-2005, 03:34 PM

edgewood4

They might be starting to chuck them up but they are still 4-7 from beyond the arch. They just need to be patient and let the offense come to them.

did the guys just think that the clock was going to run out before they could get a shot off?!? seem's like our head isn't really into it today, everyone seems a little lax on the defensive end and some stupid plays on the offense. I knew there was a reason I cringed when I saw this game was at noon, our guys never play well this early.
what are they shooting like 55%+?

I agree. The Cats can play better, but Stanford is hitting some tough shots. Grunfeld and Hernandez were left open a couple times, but other than that most of their shots have been contested. I'm not feeling too bad right now.

I think this is sort of a case similar to the ASU game, we didnt shoot terribly, but they shot lights out. I can't see the furd playing much better than they are right now and there is only one place to go... DOWN. I see us clamping down on defense and running away with this one similar to the ASU game.

The rebound stat is misleading, since we have 5 offensive boards to their 2. The problem is that they aren't missing their shots, so we aren't getting defensive boards.
On a positive, we have very few turnovers, while we've gotten a number of steals off Stanford. Need to work the ball and get better shots on offense.

I can only recall two steals, I think they only had 8 TO's at last count. Not many tipped balls on defense, we need to be more active, it looked a little better the last couple minutes.

While all our attention is held rapt by Marques Johnson's five favorite places to play, I would like to note that Arizona will come out strong the second half...that's just no guarantee the shots will fall. The 'cats need to win the rebounding battle and force more turnovers. Too many open looks from 3.

For some reason, Rob always get the best of Frye. Channing needs to step it up and go inside for some score. I think Lute is seeing that and placing Fox in the game to help Frye out. CR needs to take better shots because he is jacking up unnecessary shots without looking to pass.

Life goes on guys. It's not the end of the world.
Standford can have their moment in the sun, I'd prefer a learning experience in the pac-10 followed up with a deep tournament run, than have a record like standford did last year and bow out so quickly.
We're still a lock for all that really matters while Standford will have to beg and claw their way to a possible bubble team.
Can't win 'em all, ya know? :)

The students are going to storm the floor. I only hope one of them trips and breaks a leg. DAMN IT!

willub,
Consider it a compliment, storming the floor means they think they pulled off the upset of the century.

I like your take, Bison. We'll get Stanford back.
But Arizona can't have another regression like this in-conference, or the Final Four dreams are all over.

We shot 37% today and they shot 59%. That is completely unacceptable. They were lights out today though. O well...

It is placing so much on the "we'll get you back" crap that got our team into this trouble. If we treated this like a regular Pac-10 game, I'm sure the results will be different.

Big boned? How about fat-assed? That chick was so fat, she couldn't zip up her jump suit. She looked like a red and black sausage. Ugh.

I dont think anything could have made the results of this game different other than having the team SHOW UP for the damn game

djcat, I didn't mean it that way. Arizona lost this game because it didn't put in the effort, not because it was so intent on revenge.
The team got complacent after those double-digit wins over Cal and ASU. Back to basics, guys!

CG97,
I think what really changed my thinking was the 97 team, I hate it when people make comparisons, but I strongly believe losing games in the regular season can only help.
I mean how many 1-loss 2-loss or 3-loss teams have actually ever won the NCAA title, since the 64-team started?

Funny you make that comparison, Bison, because the '97 team was the only one that ever made me really lose hope. And it was in a situation much like the Stanford game today: down 10 to South Alabama with just over five minutes remaining, I thought the team was done.
After ALL the losses in-conference that team had gone through, the South Alabama game, for the first 35 minutes, was the last straw. I hung up my hopes on that season, chalking it up to massive underachievement by great talent again.
And then, of course, JT sparks that 10-0 run and it's all over. I was in a daze by April.

people kept making comparisons last year too, we dont have the leadership on this team, unless they really come together and realize that every game is important and you have to play defense night in and night out, not just a half here and there, we are going nowhere

I think it was the Providence game that was going to give me a heart attack, no way in hell I wanted to be the first to allow a double digit seed into the final four (unless it's happened before? besides 'Nova").
My grandfather and I used to say "if you don't lose, you can't improve." Losing helps point out your weaknesses, while coaches try to point out weaknesses in win, how often do players really remember how bad they did when they won?

All in all I still feel good about this team. Unfortunately we looked like the way we played in November. However I still have confidence in this team.

What sort of weakness can you point out today tho, this wasn't the same team that has shown up this year, even the egg we layed at Virginia wasn't this bad. You can't fix what isn't a tendency, if they had found a way to exploit our defense then that's a weakness. We simply didn't play any, that's a case of needing a nice @ss whoopin to get someone to show up.
EDIT: I thought we said if you start a game thread for a loss you were not allowed to start any more.... blame it all on BEN!!!! :wink2: :slap:

One of the assistants should have busted out the Virginia tape after that practice yesterday. If they ever see one of our top eight getting complacent that way again, Pastner, Roz or Tention need to make the team watch tape of this game.
