Emmitt Smith retires

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith retired Thursday, calling his 15-year career "a tremendous ride."

Smith, who starred for the Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons and spent the last two years with Arizona, made the announcement at the Super Bowl -- a fitting spot for a three-time champion.

"I've given everything I can possible to the game, on and off the field," Smith said.

Wearing a pinstripe suit -- blue, of course -- Smith thanked dozens of people from Pee Wee football to the Cardinals and every stop in-between. He broke down several times and had tears streaming down his face as he clutched his wife's hand.

"The memories that I have, the relationships that I'm taking away from the game are something dear and something I will take with me for the rest of my life," he said. "I'm moving on to another chapter in my life and that's a chapter I'm looking forward to."

Emmitt is a class guy and always has been...IMO he should have retired when he left the Cowboys...

Emmitt was the ****zu!!! I will always remeber his playing days as a Cowboy (even though I can't stand the boys) and not as a Cardinal.

As much as I absolutly love Emmit, he should have taken Barry Sanders lead and retired before he broke sweetness record. The fact that he kept going, even though he was still effect, kinda taints his legacy in my opinion.

Barry Sanders didn't retire so he wouldn't surpass Payton on the all time list for rushing, but over a contract dispute. The amazing thing about Emmitt was that he was almost always healthy. He was a work hourse and anybody in their right mind would have done what he did and broke the record.

This is such a stupid argument. What are you from Illinios? Smith deserved the record, he was always a solid running back who came up huge in big games (Unlike Sanders). He should always be remembered as the best long-term running back ever to play. Not only that, he had he Payton families blessing to break the record and he is still Payton Jr.'s mentor.

I wish he would have retired before going to Arizona, but that should not tarnish his record one bit. To one of the all-time greats.... :)

Emmitt's Arizona adventure won't taint his legacy.

Does anyone really think of Namath on the Rams. or Montana on the Chiefs, or Jerry Rice on whatever team he is playing for now? Maybe when they think about the end of their careers, but when you are looking at their legacy and records, no one really cares if you went somewhere else to finish your career.
