Cody Dowd (LB) and Erik Archuleta (QB) of Phoenix North have both eliminated ASU from their list due to the arrogance of the staff. Both prefer to stay in-state at UA if at all possible.

Dowd is being heavily recruited by Georgia, Nebraska, Oregon and Colorado. He attended Junior Day at UA. Getting calls to the coaching staff daily.

Archuleta is being chased by Alabama, Texas, Colorado, ASU, Oregon, Cal and has also been asked by Miami and Florida State to send tape and camp there this summer.

If UA offers they get two of the best if not the best Seniors in the Class of 2006. Let's see how aggressive the staff gets in-state this year.

I believe the Staff will be even more aggresive this year in State and dominate ASU. This year we won the battle over in-state kids easily but they still picked up some good prospects. This year though, we will get the cream of the crop which is sad for ASU since they are coming off there best season in a long time.

That is what gets me the most, we have all the momentum right now in Football and they had their best season since the mid 90's. ASU fans better enjoy their high right now because Stoops is taking us to the Promise land

Cody Dowd is going to be one of the top 5 players coming out of Arizona this year. The guy is a beast! I also think we have a great shot at landing the Maryvale kids such as the states #1 prospect Jermaine Williams.

Jermaine Williams is this years Ekom, only it is amazing that from the get go he says we are his favorite. He is easily my favorite recruit this upcoming year. The players we need to go hard after are: Jermaine Williams, John Romero, Cody Dowd, Jon Hargis (although I hate his family ties to ASU), and finally the last one could go to whoever the coaching staff evaluates best such as the 6'1 corner from Maryvale with 4.4 speed. This years recruiting is going to be very intense.

CUBUFFNAZ, You are probably correct about Dowd, but Archuleta probably isn't even in the Top 15 prospects in the state.

Maryvale has 3 D-1 prospects..Williams, and corners Allen and Bowser. All of whom seem to be very interested in UA. Are chances are good with Romero and Dowd but I think Hargis will end up at ASU.

As for Archuleta...Hes one of the better QBs in the state but I would put a few other QBs ahead of him.

How can you guys get Archuleta? I thought coach stoops promised Tuitama that he wouldn't recruit another QB until 2007, correct? Looks like this kid is going out of state, as ASU is stacked at QB.

Uh, no. The deal as reported was no other QB in the same class (2005).

Ryan Stevens
02-27-2005, 02:09 PM
Also keep in mind when that supposed deal was made we had Costa, OHara, and Heavner as scholarship quarterbacks. Tuitama does not care who else we get and we will get more in this class.

Also, for AZFootball18 or anyone else, have you seen Archuleta play? The guy only threw the ball 1100 yards last year and only ten touchdowns. Did he split time with an upperclassman or is North a predominantly run oriented team? I always get a little worried when a recruit does not throw the ball much. I am sure there will be quarterbacks in California, Texas, and the one from Utah that will be our priority.

I have seen him play a few times...Like I said before hes one of the better QBs in the state but I would still put a few others ahead of him.

I have seen him play a few times...Like I said before hes one of the better QBs in the state but I would still put a few others ahead of him.

Archuleta played at Mesquite last year in a run oriented offense. His stats (1,153 yds passing, 10 tds/4ints, 59% completion pct, 400 yards rushing, 6 rushing td's) came in a little over six games (26 quarters). Before his elbow injury he led the State (5A) in TD passes and still finished fairly respectable in passer rating (100.2) 3rd in the East Valley).

At North they run a spread offense and the goals for him this year are 40 td's, 4,000 yards. Goldstein wants him to beat Kellen Bradley's numbers from his senior year at Saguaro.

With regard to other QB's. I have seen them all play and in the Class of 2006 in the Phx area there are few that can be considered D1. Archuleta went head to head with all of them at ASU and came away with Camp MVP. AZ18 ... give me a list and I will give you an honest evaluation of the talent.

Every recruiting class requires a QB. UA will get at least one this year.

CUBUFFNAZ, You are probably correct about Dowd, but Archuleta probably isn't even in the Top 15 prospects in the state.

Rocket44 ...

Max Emfinger seems to think Archuleta is one of the top in the Country. Has him rated a 4.5 start out of 5. The only AZ prospect on his list so far.

He is good enough to be invited to over 10 Junior Days (not an easy thing to get) including UA. A QB that is 225 Lbs, benches 300 lbs and runs in the 4.6 range and only a Junior is a kid lots of schools will go after.

You've seen them all play? Damn you must have been a very busy guy. I'll give you some names because I am interested in what you have to say about these guys.

Chase Brunick 6'5 200 (Desert Ridge)- 96 of 177 for 1,487 yds and 13 TD's *Only played in 6 games

Ian Michael (O'Connor)- Threw for 1,430 yds and 11 TDs also rushed for 1,084 yds with 19 TDs

Nathan Hodges 6'3 215 (Greenway)- 123 of 221 for 1,999 yds with 19 TDs and 9 INTs

Dax Crum 6'4 185 (Horizon)- Threw for 1,547 yards and 13 TD's

Shane McBurney 6'3 185 (Basha)- 76 of 127 for 1,229 yds and 13 TD's with 4 INT's

Jon Tobin 6'5 210 (Cactus)- 77 of 193 for 1,191 yds and 11 TDs also had 87 carries for 192 yds. and 9 TDs

Just so you know I have nothing against Erik and I hope he can produce like Kellen Bradly did at Saguaro.

Uh, no. The deal as reported was no other QB in the same class (2005).

Actually, Willie said that he didn't want to listen to Tedford, when Cal tried to recruit him late, because Arizona was so loyal to him. Stoops made a commitment to not take another QB until 2007, according to Tuitama. So, that's why I ask how Arizona can be leading for Archuleta. How can Stoops be recruiting a QB if he promised not to?

I never said that UA was gonna get Archuleta. As for the Tuitama thing I think Stoops promised he wouldnt recruit another QB in this class but due to the fact that we lost Costa, O'Hara and Heavner I think Willie understands that we have to get another QB in the next class. He wants what is best for the team.

I hear Bolasky is just a tough football player. I don't know how he's rated but I hear he's one of those guys that never take a play off.

Smith at Sunnyside is a BURNER, but is really small. Hopefully Sanchez can get some weight on him and he keeps drinking milk.

What do you think about the two line prospects at Sunnyside? Kinda undersized height wise but so was Waldrop. 270 at Sunnyside is a good 270, their strength and conditioning is incredible. If either has decent speed I wonder how they'd do as DT's. Just wondering what you think.

Kat, you are right about Mike Smith..Too bad he is so small. He is also a good defensive player.

OL/DL Jose Lopez had a very good junior year making all southern arizona. I can see him playing either side of the ball. As for Alex Smith...He was a tranfer and didnt see much playing time his junior year because Sunnyside already had their lineman set. He is going to be a good DT for the blue devils.

Arizona18,

You are getting "stats" from Arizona varsity.com.

Brunick has not played anyone. He did it at 4A in a limited schedule. Big difference doing it at that level and in the Fiesta Region every week.

Michales and O'Connor played a very light schedule and got killed when they played anyone halfway decent.

Hodges is an unknown and you are right in that I did not see each kid. I missed him.

Dax Crum was benched the last two games due to ineffectiveness. His completion pct was 43% and his td/int ratio was 11/15. A dismal 60 qb rating. You notice how your stats don't list attempts/completions/yards, etc.

People at Basha that know and have coached both admit that Archuleta is far superior. Basha played a very limited and cupcake schedule at 4A and the only time McBurney played a good team he choked. Chaparral killed him and Chaparral was not very good this year. He had 3 int's in that game alone. McBurney has been working with Van Rapphorst on his motion but he is more of an "athlete" type than QB. But dad is the coach.

Tobin and Archuleta are the two top dogs in the Class with perhaps Wilkins from Westwood (needs work on his throwing motion). Tobin is great in the pocket but tends to throw a bit off when on the run. Archuleta did not get the opportunity to roll out last year and once he is in the spread offense a comparison will be easier.

Yeah I am getting the "stats" from ArizonaVarsity.com because I wrote that list. Most of these stats have come from the head coachs themselves.

AZ18,

So how is the poll on prepaz regarding the state's Best QB coming? I would be interested in seeing the results.

Sahuarita has a kicker we should be checking out. Kyle Day - he's also QB and DB. He is a D-1 kicker who kicked at least three FG's over 50 last year including a 53 yarder in State semi-final game. I hear he is being recruited by Cal among others. Very consistent kicker and excellent kid.
