LAKE FOREST, Illinois (Ticker) - After failing to work out a trade, the Chicago Bears released cornerback R.W. McQuarters on Monday.
McQuarters started 47 of 72 games in five years with the Bears and had nine interceptions, including three for touchdowns.
"After exploring trade opportunities with R.W., we felt that it was in everyone's best interest to release him at this time," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said. "We respect and appreciate his accomplishments as a Bear and wish him well."
McQuarters also is the fourth-leading punt returner in franchise history with 983 yards for a 10.6 yard average and two touchdowns.
A first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 1998, McQuarters was traded to the Bears in June 2000 for a draft pick.
Is there a story behind the story? Chicagoans, do tell!

Unfortunately, the bears are the height of illogical activity. But, as a Chicagoan and an Illinois alum...I have an idea...their new bears offensive coordinator is the worthless piece of crap Ron Turner the recently fired Illinois head football coach. The guy is an absolute bungle from all aspects and wouldn't be surprised to see the bears offense sink further this year under his "leadership"...

As much as Bears fans and Illinois alums would love to pin everything on Mr. Turner, he is not responsible for personnel decisions on the defensive side of the ball. This is just the next in a long line of puzzling moves the Bears have made over the past couple of years, and it will eventually catch up to them and lead to the firing of Jerry Angelo. Instead of cutting McQuarters, they should have held on to him and waited for the inevitable spate of training camp/preseason injuries to see if there was any interest in him then. Instead, Angelo got snookered by teams who claimed to want no part of R.W., who will now turn around and sign him for a pittance to come in and compete for a job.
Lovie Smith is a good coach with a great defensive mind, but now he literally has no kind of depth on that side of the ball and very few options as to how to improve his team. It's almost like Angelo was angling for that coveted #1 draft pick in the 2006 draft and decided to give up on the season now by releasing veterans like McQuarters and Paul Edinger. If I was a Chicago sports fan, I'd be clamoring for Angelo's head right about now because he certainly has done nothing to improve this team.

The height of embarassment came last year (or maybe 2 years ago) when we started talking about improving our draft pick by loosing games...ouch... :fur:

Does this mean that Bobby Wade will get another chance at returning punts?

i could see that happening. Its too early to tell anything right now for any team. I'm an Eagles fan and people got the birds written off cuz TO isnt at minicamp...? its May, other teams will release players, some will be signed by the Bears to replace him
maybe they will be lucky and pick up charles woodsen, who wants out.

This is lunacy - R-Dub was a good returner and you can NEVER have too many corners, even if he was outrageously expensive as far as his value as a corner goes. This may come back to haunt and I hope for their sake that they don't turn over all of those duties to Azumah. He's great at returning, but they couldn't afford to lose him to return injuries.
I'm wondering the same thing. Doesn't make any sense to me either.
