Oh man did you guys just hear the dig on ASU by the Titan announcer on the webcast? Brutal...
Of coarse his dig was prefaced by the remark "I have not seen them (ASU) play, but..." which kinda makes the announcer quite the idiot to follow that comment the way he did.
Titan
06-06-2005, 09:27 PM
I got the buzzing, too. I had to turn the sub down and that helped a bit.
SCCat
06-06-2005, 09:28 PM
The announcer said that ASU was nothing special (even though he hasn't seen ASU play), so that Titan fans generally thought that if they could win this game against a good team (Arizona), they would breeze by ASU.

We screwed ourselves. I have never heard of a team, basically turning down home field.
I don't know why? When I was at school 88-92, they got good crowds. Figure a regional playoff, top seed would get some of the old folks and summer school kids to the park.

My favorite class at Arizona: Athletic Director 101
The final was a piece of cake... nobody could get these questions wrong. Here are some examples:
To host a regional tourney game, it is important to:
(a) have hot chicks on campus
(b) have a great record
(c) have decent attendence
(d) Both B and C
To get necessary attendence, do you:
(a) Do nothing, if people are interested... they will come
(b) Have promotions to get students to games
(c) Promote to the community of retired folks with nothing better to do
(d) Both B and C
Congrats, your team had a great regular season and has positioned themselves to host the first round. Do you:
(a) Decline the offer
(b) Accept the offer
See...piece of cake.

What is the deal with attendence at games this season? When I was there... always a good crowd (granted, that was 88-92). I remember a large group of us planning our spring schedule around games... no classes in the afternoon. There was a group of 100 or so who would meet in the same section on the 3rd base line every game. Of the 100, about 75 would be at a given game.
Have people stopped going to the games on a regular basis?????????

If it was not for Livengood, Lopez would probably be in Westwood coaching the Bruins.
I wonder if Livengood went to the boosters and former Cats who are in the majors if they would donate some money to host a regional? I bet he feels horrible now, seeing how the Cats were stuck in Fullerton and asu got the easiest regional.
I hope next year the UofA will promote the baseball program. They need to focus on families. Maybe have kids under 14 get in free. They can make some money at the concessions. If the families like what they see, they'll come back.
Also, start the Friday and Saturday games a little earlier. Have some of the games start at 4:00PM or 5:00PM, that way the games end a little earlier and the students still have plenty of time to go out that night.

I guarantee you that if they would have hosted, more people would have shown up. If this team would have made it to two straight WS, which would have happened, than the town would have really started to notice the program.
If Lopez gets a offer from another attractive school he should leave, it is complete BS that Livengood blamed the fans for this one. I really, really think this town would have gotten behind them if they hosted a playoff series. Call me crazy, but I really do.

The crowd was pretty hit and miss this year. The series against texas brought out a great crowd- pretty much filled the place up and the fans were really into it. But the series against Oregon State was a huge disappointment considering how highly ranked they were and the importance of the series.
It seems like the fans are just fickle- not extremely loyal like the softfall fans, for instance. I don't know why more people don't show up. The team is fun to watch, there are plenty of cute girls in the crowd, it's cheap, and the weather is usually great.

Does someone want to tell me how ASU and their broke AD can afford a regional and Arizona can't.
I am with you ZC. This move stunk and like I've said before was made because of Livengood's terrible hire of "He whose name shall not be spoken." That one large indiscretion has cost the UA not only 5 years of good football, but millions of dollars in revenue. No bowl games, fewer TV appearences, lower merchandise and concession sales, smaller home crowds and gate receipts, fewer large football program donations and a contract buyout. It's a decision that's spiraled now into AD layoffs and costing a team on the field. Let's hope that the UA is nearing the end of the repercussions from Livengood's awful decision.

I've been criticized before for dogging on Livengood but I gotta agree he should take the blame for this one. Just like he should take the blame for the Hoops team getting the hardest region in 2003 b/c he was the head of the committee and they didn't want it to look like we were getting special treatment.
If Livengood concentrates on his golf game in 2003 instead of leading the tourney committee, we go to the final four.
If Livengood doesn't pass up a regional for baseball in 2005, we go to the world series.

Wanted to congratulate your team on a great season! we look forward to playing ASU yet again at Goodwin Field. I am upset at the way the NCAA treated Fullerton, Arizona and Mizzou. How could they stack the deck so one sided. This was by far the most difficult regional once again. I'm sorry for your misfortune, but I am proud of the Titans and their never say die attitude. The road to Omaha goes through Fullerton. Look forward to playing you guys again next year if it works out. Congrats again on a great season.

If Mike Stoops doesnt pan out, Livengood will probably be on a thin wire as he should be...

"Call me crazy, but I really do." ---ok, you're crazy. ;)
It may seem a tad simplistic, but to me it basically comes down to one issue --- more fans in the seats would have prevented this whole debacle. That being said, we fans need to look in the mirror and either go to the games and support the program or quit *****ing about the situation and its results.
As they say, hind-sight is 20/20---we seem to have a lot of "20/20" vision on deck right now. It is a natural reaction, but I don't have to like it or agree with it. ;)
No offense, but let's stop the finger-pointing and acknowledge a great year from the Bat Cats. Great job guys and thanks for the run this year!

Sporto, that's the wrong attitude to take. This town gets behind winners, they would have gotten behind the batcats. I know I was planning on going to all of the games.
I feel bad for the players and Livengood owes them an apology and he needs to stop pointing the finger at the town.

"This town gets behind winners, they would have gotten behind the batcats."
Valid point except, the Cats won last year and this year---if the town gets behind winners where were the fans all season?? A bit may have had to do with the selling of the sport, but, come on, you can't lay it entirely at the feet of "undermarketing".
I am by no means happy with how things have turned out but I think it is a bit much to lay this all off on JL et al.. I am also by no means bashing the fans in Tucson (the scummy Phoenix-ites do that enough for all of us!) but we fans need to take some responsibility in this matter.
By the way---the Cowboys suck!!! :) (Broncos fan here. I still have not gotten over the 1978 Super Bowl)
