I heard that A&M had hired their new coach, did Oklahoma ever fill their vacancy or are they still pursuing Lopez?

I believe the bench coach at OU who took over is going to continue on as head coach.

He was a head coach at Oral Roberts and came to OU very well respected.

ps shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh about Lopez going. :)

He is not OU's #1 choice right now. They are looking at some big names, but may have to settle for the bird in hand

It was announced in the Dallas Morning News today that zero-U (OU) has hired the baseball coach from Whicita State (Stephenson) as there new baseball coach. So that has now removed the top two mentioned positions who were pursuing Lopez (OU - A&M) :)

This is really funny, they still don't have a coach.

You would think he may ask about that before he got the job

But this does :wink2:

“Contrary to published reports and rumors about my imminent departure from Arizona, I would like to firmly state my commitment to the university and to its baseball program." -Andy Lopez

Replace "Andy Lopez" with "Larry Smith", and that quote looks awfully familiar.

USC became my most hated FB team after that, and it took until Smith was fired to get over it.

Andy Lopez is staying. let's put his possible move to rest. Andy went public saying he is staying. He enjoys working for Livengood and his family loves Tucson.

Out of all the coaches at the UofA, Andy is right at the top when it comes to class and integrity. Never compare Larry Smith and Andy. Larry bolted in the middle of the night to USC. Lopez would never do that. His word is as good as gold.

A tiny little part of me is still in disbelief at Larry Smith's decision. I still remember the press conference, and I didn't know how to react after it was over. I can't hate Larry Smith, with the way he brought football back from the dead--even though he made a stupid, greedy move. I still pulled for him at Mizzou.

He lost me with the middle finger salute.

Larry got his just rewards at USC. When he pulled out the garbage that USC should not expect to be able to beat Fresno St every year, he was gone. He then resurfaced at Mizzou where he did zilcho (other than blow that game in 1997 to Nebraska after Corby Jones played his @ss off) before getting another axe. Karma is one heck of a biatch.

PS 1990, I was at the "finger" game at AZ stadium. It was truly outstanding to kick Larry's rearend with that terrible 4-7 Dick Tomey team. Best football game of the year by far!

Many fingers were delivered by Larry.

After the Oregon game. When he told fans to stay home. I think about 15,000 did.

Larry Smith disappointed me. I thought he was gonna be the one to take us to the next level. The 9-3 team should/could have been built upon to lead to greatness for the 90's. After waiting thru the 80's ( we had some close calls)I thought we were gonna be a big time program in the 90's.

Yes I know Tomey had a great Pac 10 record in the 90's. Two teams '94 and '98. The rest were .500. Not bashing Tomey just pointing out that I will always feel betrayed by Smith. He could/should have made the U of A a big time program here. He had 10 seasons from the mess Tony Mason left us when entering the the Pac 10 in our third year 1980.

I was at that game where Smith gave the middle finger to the fans. The Cats were playing UCLA and if they would of won, they would of gone on to the Rose Bowl based on their final two wins against Oregon and asu.

I liked Larry Smith, but that night with his middle finger salute was wrong and the way he just got up and left for USC was done very unprofessionally. That was almost 20 years ago and time heals all wounds. I hope Larry is making a 100% recovery with his fight against cancer.

Smith did a lot of good for Arizona football. He took over a program that would eventually face sanctions and still kept it afloat. Huge wins at #1 USC, at #9 Notre Dame, #6SMU and those wins against asu, two of them knocking them out of the Rose Bowl and the other one giving the #4 devils their first loss and ruining any chance they had of being the #1 team in the country.

Are you sure about the UCLA game getting the middle finger ? Didn't we lose 24-16 or something like that ? God who was the backup QB finishing that game ? They were selling roses for that game.

You are probably right. I know the Oregon school(s) were next.
Fuzzy memory for me I guess.

Yes he had great wins but great losses. Frenso State when they were horrible. I just wish he didn't leave like he did. Especially to SC.

Professionally of course I'm still bitter. Petty you might say :)

Was the QB Andy Crouch ? or Couch ?

It was Andy CROUCH who was the backup QB to Jenkins, and the incident I remember was Smith flipping off the fans at Arizona Stadium when he was at USC (1991?) and going down hard to the Cats.

I have some really good friends who are former OU baseball players and they are soooo pissed about this whole situation and hire. Cochelle was a great coach, sucks he had to go out the way he did. His comments were in poor taste, but he was a good man.

It was definitely the UCLA game. I remember the next game against Oregon, the stadium looked half empty.
