ESPN- SAN FRANCISCO -- Kenyon Jones, a college basketball star in the Bay Area who went on to a pro career in Europe, has died. He was 27.

A spokesman for the University of San Francisco, where Jones was the most valuable player of the West Coast Conference in 1999-00, said Jones died Thursday at his family home in Atlanta. School spokesman Pete Simon didn't know the cause of death, but Eurobasket.com reported Jones died of a heart attack.

Jones, a 6-foot-10 forward-center, played his first three college seasons at California, averaging 6.0 points and 3.7 rebounds as a junior. After transferring to San Francisco, he was chosen as the WCC's top player while averaging 16.5 points and 9.0 rebounds for the Dons.

Jones played for two teams in Greece's top league over the past four seasons.

I remember Jones well. He came to Cal along with Shareef Adbur-Rahim in Todd Bozeman's "Great Recruiting Class" Soon after, he and the other Bears made a fine Tourney run in 1998 under Ben Braun defeating a heavily favored Villanova team in the 2nd round to advance to the Sweet 16. Thoughts and prayers to his family. He was a fine player and was known as a good guy.
