Correction:

Theo Davis (#13) didn't qualify at Iowa State and is now at a prep school.

Last week, Davis re-opened his recruitment which freed up an ISU scholie.

Last weekend, Lawrence Westbrook verbally committed during an official visit.

So you're saying that three former AZ locks that we passed on (Rashaun Woods, Law Hill and T-Will) will end up having better careers than Fendi and JP? Are you also including their playing and coaching situations (system, environment, etc...) or only based on talent?

Ben Hansen

I'm saying they'll have better frosh yrs than Fendi and JP, not careers. Only Magnum am I talking about in both cases.

No, JP Prince, I am shocked and would have to include him on the list.

Please just stop. You are going to have Kina (who is a really nice guy) on this list and not Sylvester Seay. One guy won't probably play much at Navy and the other will start in the Pac-10. I only wanted to provide one example but this list is absurd. No offense.

I'm assuming he put Kina on the list because of his close relationship with him in the past. Do they even play basketball at USN? And if they didn't would anybody know any differently?

5th-year preps shouldn't be "true freshmen" IMHO.

ASU's Seay turned 20 years old last July.

Some guys on Ben's list could have a college degree at 21 years of age.

I think you're overhyping Ryan Wright, Ben. From what we've seen out of him, he's pretty raw and most likely won't make an immediate impact. Luc Mbah Moute and or Roll will really surprise you guys this year.

Ben Hansen

I'm not overhyping him at all. I saw him plenty in AAU ball and loved his game...same with Aboya and Collison.Fendi speaks highly of Luc so I take his word for it there but I refuse to believe anyone about Roll until I see him myself.

Your list needs some revamping,
Forwards are a dime-a-dozen, 8 of your top 10 are all Forwards and 7 of your bottom 10 are guards.....and only 1 center in the whole list?

I guess the Cats should've recruited Kaleo and Darren Jordan over Prince, huh?:robevans:
I also like Joe Darger over Brandon Costner, Korvotney Barber and Marcus Johnson.:dirk: Or anyone other than McRoberts or maybe Hansborough over Richard Hendrix.:dirk:

i am not saying anything about what the UofA should or should not have done
im stating that there are 20 forwards on a list of 33, and that maybe that itself helps to a small degree prove that forwards are plentiful

Luke Zeller of Notre Dame(Mr. Indiana) should be in the top-33. Luke will be seeing a lot of playing time. He should help Torin Francis down low.

Lewis Clinch at Georgia Tech will see a lot of action since Tech's backcourt was pretty well gutted.

While I've not seen a lot of Luke Zeller, I did see him in person once and wasn't impressed at all. The annual Kentucky/Indiana all-star game was in my hometown this year. Zeller was supposed to come out and dominate, but instead did nothing against a 6-6 PF. Of course he could have just had a bad game, but after watching him in the McDonalds game and the all-star game it seems that he will need a few years to develop.

That's great you saw him at AAU events Ben, but watching him at UCLA and this past summer in the Say No League has led most of us to believe he will not be the impact PF we had hoped he would be right away. He's extremely athletic and will become a very good/great player, but he won't be an impact freshman, imo.

Good call Ben.

And really, he may have missed on Rolle but you take any list from any basketball pundit of that time, and Ben's list is probably more accurate than the the vast majority of them.

Yeah, kind of interesting, but once again, bottom line, one more shot at Ben.

Why is this necessary? It's in the past. It's bush and below any of us in this Cat family.

I'm sure everyone has a view of Ben and what he meant to this site and Cat ball. I, for one, really appreciated Ben's writing, his verve and color, his risk taking(as in evaluating prospects), and his character. I would hope if I had the opposite view and thought Ben was uninteresting or way off in his opinions, that I would never bring something up intended to degrade or embarrass him.

My view.....

I don't know why Jason bumped it, but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it wasn't to take a shot at Ben. Jason has more character than that and I'm sure just wanted to discuss the topic.

I agree with you though, Ben was never afraid to give an opinion, and right or wrong, never took the kudos or criticism too seriously.

Good lord. I got negative repped for bumping this? It definitely was not a shot at Ben. I saw Ziggiles link it and when I read it I found it to be interesting because it was another indication on how a lot of times rankings mean nothing. From Karpman to Ben to Dintzer to JP Prince and Fendi, I just thought there were some interesting takes in it and surely did not mean to take any shots at anybody.

Jason, I certainly believe your word that your motivation was positive. I initially read your post and sensed otherwise, interpreting it in the context of many posts over the last couple of years which I felt were clearly meant to denigrate Ben.

And yes, I think it's interesting to look at history, especially if it has some relevance to the present. I love it when someone has the cajs' to force-rank their views of players.

My view.....

I wasn't around the board back then, but I'm not afraid to say that I never got the whole Cult of Ben Hansen thing that a lot of the long-time posters show. I actually like his writing style, and appreciate that he had the chutzpah to put out his own lists and make predictions, and have nothing but good thoughts for him regarding his health struggles, but really, that list was all sorts of awful, even in the light of what was available to us then, much less in retrospect, and this isn't the first time an old Ben thread has been necromanced and my general opinion has been "WTF?!?!?"

I'm not trying to diminish Ben in the eyes of the longtimers here, just thought a dissenting opinion was warranted here.

I appreciate you bumping this thread Jason, as I otherwise would never have seen it, and I agree there were many interesting takes.

Yeah, I think Basnight does that kind of stuff.

I know this isn't at all what you meant Ryan, but this is also not the first time I've seen Ben and Bazzie mentioned in the same thread ... Hmmmm ...

Sock or not, I have to agree with sparkysucks. So far, soooo bad ... No one listed after The Law (#19) except for Costner and perhaps Barber has even come close, and many of the Top 20 were overvalued. Even worse is that only 3 of those listed have gone pro so far, which you'd expect such a list to have more.

Name 5 people better then those on that list

I can easily name 5 guys that should have been on that list at least above anyone ranked 25-33, all guys I liked at the time. I won't list the ones that went Pro out of HS, as neither did Ben.

Chris Douglas-Roberts - Memphis - a glaring, bright-light omission.
Dominic James - Marquette - Should have been Top 10 on that list.
Jeff Adrien - UConn - Solid contributor the past two seasons even if he's not UConnFan's favorite.
Micah Downs - Gonzaga (then Kansas) - I liked what I saw of him at Gonzaga his last 10 or so games, and he'll only get better.
Tasmin Mitchell - LSU - did more than Rolle at LSU.

That's not even counting guys were were clearly better only through the benefit of hindsight, like Mbah A Moute or Collison at UCLA, Ginyard at UNC, or Fields at Pitt, or even guys like Hodge at Florida, Abrams at Texas and Goods at Stanford who have actually shown improvement over their careers, unlike some on that list.

Props to Ben for taking a shot at it. Doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on it.

Let's check out other rankings:

So, there were plenty of crappy lists that year, what does that prove? :lol2: Aside from the fact that rankings are often inaccurate, no one knew any better, and if anything, the 2005 was a down year.

Again, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. I'm done with picking apart that list and attempting to justify an opinion of mine here. It won't be budging anytime soon.

Huh? You can name five just on ASU, UCLA and Cal.

Like Rey said, hindsight is a great thing. Props to those who put their reputation on the line, and a Colbert "wag of the finger" to those who call them on it years later.

I know there are many here who think this site is better without Ben, but I miss him, and think this site has a big emotional hole now.

Merkin all of those lists are much better than ben's. it is okay to be wrong just stop trying come hell or high water to protect some predictions that were really bad. I dont know why you want to stand up for them but stop, his predictions were way off. Not personal just facts.

the website is fine. it is recognized by now that you love ben but this is rediculous. there is no emotional hole. just a really bad list of freshmen..... that is making me kind of emotional come to think of it.

very very very few of those best of list can stand the test of time. just look at the nba, nfl, or mlb draft. how much money do professional franchises put into scouting players, yet how often do they miss?

now you kick it down a few notches to incoming college freshmen, with come with even less information, then tell the researcher that you will do most of your scoutings via the internet. what kind of result can someone realistically expect?

btw, can someone tell me whatever happened to ben hansen? i know that he got a stroke, was in rehabilitation, then what?

Terrence Morris - once an expected overall #1 became a second round flop. CSI's Ben Eze was once rated the #1 overall draft talent, only to go undrafted. This shiit happens all the time. Darko's go top 3, Players like Arenas go in the 2nd round.

The NBA GM's are so busy trying to outsmart each other so much that they continually let teams like Dallas and San Antonio embarrass them come draft time...

Yup! Draft Diop at #8, let S.A. steal Ginobili. Draft Chandler at #2, let Dallas steal Howard. It just goes on-and-on. The same bad teams gamble 'lotto' style while the good teams just add talent.

It works the same way at the collegiate level. Emeka Okafor is a steal!! Nick Horvack sucks! Arenas is a steal!! Eric Boateng sucks!

Really, how many people on this site had had a chance to evaluate EVERY player, then had the sack to rate them? Right. That's what I thought.

Oh, and I never saw the GodFather movie. I give it a 1/10 for character development, a 0/10 for dramatic effect, etc. Now how lame is that??

Wow. What did you do with the other hour in that day?

I think the bumps are interesting, too. The chutzpah of the predictions is only part of it. There's also the certitude with which these predictions pour forth. Ben and TD used to have these epic back and forths about who was right ... right now! It's like they forgot they were talking about future performance.

But as long as they can Rolle with the punches, shouldn't be any harm in bumping.

Plus, they serve as cautionary tales for the next class of Three Kings or whatever.

Let's be fair to Ben here; the only reason Magnum Rolle is #1 on this list is because Nick DeWitz, Nic Wise and Rico Tucker weren't in the class of 2005.
