View Full Version : Colorado defense . . .

Supposedly Colorado has the #22 rush defense in the country. In reality, they look like some "vintage" Arizona teams . . . you know, the ones where our linebackers would hit runners and bounce off them like a superball off the garage floor? I have not seen one solid tackle yet.
Should be a long day for Colorado . . .

If you can pass all day, why run?

Texas' "passes" are just glorified runs . . .

True, but if I remember correctly from the whole year, Colorado's run defense looks relatively good in comparison with their atrocious pass D.

Huh? You can't be serious. Texas runs a vertical passing game that frees up Vince if he wants to run. They rarely run WR screens, and only throw out into the flats after VY has gone thru his options.

In this game? I've been flipping back and forth between the basketball game, but every "pass" I've seen (other than the interception) have been passes to the flats, or Vince Young scrambles. Four complete for 31 yards = less than 7 yards per, no?

I respect women and everything, but Vince Young throws like a girl...And Bill is right, he's a runner, that's it. His receivers make him look good more often than not on those passes he just throws up for grabs and they come down with. 'SC kills this team in the Rose Bowl.

In this game so far, yes. But in general, with the rest of their games, they have a vertical passing game.
A "Glorified run" passing game consists of screens, WR screens, and first option flat passes to the TE or FB. That doesn't happen at Texas.
Vince is taking what they are giving him right now.

Was that vertical enough for you?
Itamicbomb
12-03-2005, 02:17 PM
It was 27 yards down the field, but it was soft-tossed, too high, and behind the reciever. He can't throw.

That was a good pass. Don't be puckish because your QB throws like a girl. :D

You mean he throws it where his taller recievers can get it? Oh what a crime. :)

Anyone can throw jump balls, his WR with a 6 inch advantage is the one making the plays.
See, also: Chad Henne and Braylon Edwards, 2004, and lack of a vertical game in 2005.

Texas didn't become a top 10 passing team in the nation without the presence of a vertical passing game.
If you hate Texas, fine. But that pass to Thomas was perfect. Want to complain about that one?

The Big 12 is awful. Texas is a very good team, but that doesn't change the fact that they haven't played anyone since Ohio State.

No, but with the exception of Texas, they may be worse than the Big East. Minus Texas, the MAC isn't that much of a stretch either. These guys are flat out terrible.

Both the teams that played last night would roll Baylor and beat every team Iowa State or lower in the standings. Maybe even Colorado.
The Big 12 this year is Texas, two mediocre teams, and 9 flaming sacks of crap.

You're right, those big wins against Maine (I-AA), Wake Forest (11th in the ACC), and Pittsburgh (by one at home when they were absolutely terrible) are really impressive.

Well lets break this down.
Oklahoma State: 4-7 team with 3 wins coming against Montana State, Arkansas State and Florida Atlantic. Scores? 15-10 over Montana, 23-3 over FA, 20-10 over Arkansas State. I think it is safe to say they aren't a good team
Iowa State: beat Iowa but so does everybody else early in the season, an 11 pt win at home against Illinois State and a 7 pt win at Army
Colorado: besides Texas they have been decent this year beating the OOC powerhouse of New Mexico State..they did squeak by CSU though
Nebraska: Beat the powerhouse of Maine 25-7 in a game that was close throughout, beat Pitt 7-6 and did drub Wake Forest
Mizzou: Whats with Arkansas State? Lost to New Mexico 45-35 but did beat that Troy powerhouse
Kansas: OOC includes FA, Appalachian State and La Tech..yippee. Funny how they lose their first four conference games then destroy Nebraska
K-State: Did beat Marshall by 2 and also Florida International and North Texas..congrats
Texas Tech: Florida International, Sam Houston State, Indiana State. Only loss to Texas..if you ignore that loss to Oklahoma State
Oklahoma: Loss to TCU and UCLA but coincidentally have turned it around against the conference
AM: lost to Clemson, beat Texas State by 13 but hey they beat SMU
Baylor: beat SMU, Samford, Army
Basically if you look, the teams that played decent OOC opponents, which is few, lost and the teams magically built up their record in what I determine to be a terrible conference

lets look at the MAC champion Akron Zips who could "compete" with big 12 teams:
7-5
"impressive" wins over powerhouses kent st, ohio, buffalo, middle tennesee.
2 good wins over niu and a 24-14 win over bowling green
losses to that Purdue team that had a great year:rolleyes:, central michigan, 20-0 to army, 23-51 loss to miami(oh), and that good loss to powerhouse ball st.

The fact is the Big 12 is the freaking Big 12. They should be killing the Texas States of college football but they aren't. You're going to tell me that Montana, Army, New Mexico, MAINE, and Marshall can compete but Akron can't?

well yes...but all i am saying is that the mac wouldnt hands down beat the big 12 teams like you are saying. sure they would compete, but the big 12 has been in a bit of a slump for 2 or 3 years. you should see the recruiting coming into the big 12 still, the big 12 will be back sooner or later.

So will ever conference in America. The Big 12 is terrible. Texas has played 1, maybe 2 good teams this year.
And to add something, I'm not saying they would win the conference but they would be able to compete if not beat Kansas, Oklahoma State, Mizzou, Nebraska, K-State etc etc

I don't disagree with that at all. I think the top teams in the MAC would have 3-5 wins in conference (depending on schedule), not win either division.

I am wondering if Texas will get to 100.
Unlike most on this board, I am a die-hard Texas football fan. A few comments:
1. Regardless of his throwing motion, Vince Young is a damn good quarterback who can pass the ball effectively, and his numbers support that. He is the second most exciting player in college football, behind Reggie Bush, and who ever comes behind those 2 is a very distant third.
2. Texas is going to suffer by virtue of how abysmal the Big 12 has been this season. They haven't even come close to being tested since Ohio State, and I think that will hurt them badly when it comes time to face the Trojans in the Rose Bowl.
3. As much as it pains me to say this, I will be very surprised if Texas were to beat USC. Texas is a damn good team with ridiculous talent, but every time (in my lifetime) that Texas has assembled a team that looks unstoppable, they have gotten embarassed in Bowl games. (most notably in the 1978 Cotton Bowl vs. Notre Dame & Joe Montana)

Three touchdowns?

Big XII is down this year, dropped the bottom of the big 5 with the PAC 10. Big XII and PAC 10 are head and shoulders better than MAC, WAC, Sun Belt, etc. despite what posters are saying. Last I checked on the SOS formula used by the BCS, Texas' schedule was #23 and USC's was #41 so it doesn't appear the PAC Ten conference schedule is doing much for SOS either......
From ESPN on Vince and where pro scouts disagree with posters on this thread as they apparently think he is first round QB:
For those who missed the appearance by Vince Young on "Pardon the Interruption" this week, well, let's just say the University of Texas quarterback wasn't exactly steadfast in reiterating his previously stated stance that he will return for his senior season in 2006.
And that's because, not surprisingly, the Heisman Trophy candidate is considering his options.
In fact, ESPN.com has learned that Young and his family, with one wary eye on the NCAA rules concerning his eligibility and the other on the first round of the '06 NFL draft, have begun to consider potential agents. Not consider in the sense that they are winnowing down a laundry list of suitors, or even auditioning any potential representatives, although that latter element could change as soon as Saturday, following the Big 12 title game. Rather, the family, in a much broader sense and well within NCAA guidelines, is listening to recommendations and designing an interview process in the event that Young ultimately decides the NFL siren song is simply too tempting.
Vince Young has publicly said that he will return to Texas for his senior season. For now, the process is more than a little unclear, according to people in the know. There is a local Houston attorney, and longtime family friend, who recently became accredited by the NFL Players Association to represent players, and who is telling some people that he will have a role in Young's decision. The person with the most influence, however, is Young's mother, whom he lists as his "favorite superhero" in his media guide bio. And Ray Seals, his former coach at Madison High School in Houston, is almost certain to be among those counseling the quarterback about his future.
NFL scouts, of course, are eyeing the Young situation with considerable interest. The senior crop of quarterbacks for the '06 draft -- led by Southern California's Matt Leinart, fast-rising Jay Cutler of Vanderbilt and perhaps the underachieving but talented Brodie Croyle of Alabama -- is not viewed as a strong one. While scouts are a bit divided over Young, with some feeling that Notre Dame's Brady Quinn is the superior junior, there is little doubt he would be a first-round pick if he entered the draft as an underclassman.
Young has great physical stature, has played in and won some big games, and is viewed by teammates as a terrific leader. The early read from scouts is that he might not be quite as athletic as all those long runs make him appear to be, but there are plenty of tools and a lot of intangibles to work with.
This season, Young, who tends to be his own toughest critic, has completed 168 of 268 passes for 2,576 yards, with 23 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. He has rushed 128 times for 793 yards and eight touchdowns.
It's hardly a slam dunk, as is the case with juniors such as the Southern Cal tailback tandem of Reggie Bush and LenDale White, that Young will be in the '06 draft. He is said to be a good listener, open to advice, and will probably lean a bit on Texas coach Mack Brown, who has a legion of NFL contacts, for counsel as well. But the jump to the NFL is a lot more viable now for Young than it was only a few months ago, and no one should be too surprised when recruiters for agents start cozying up to him within minutes of the end of Saturday's conference championship game.
