Anyone have any favorite events?

I'll tune in for the Downhill and GS and for the speed events like Luge and Bobsled.

Ice Dancing is a big no-no though.

Curling!

Seriously! It's on CNBC and MSNBC like 24/7 during the olympics, and it's great fun. I love that shuffleboard on ice is an Olympic sport. It's the ping pong of the Winter Olympics, only not so intense.

Anybody ever watched Men With Brooms?

I dont really like the winter olympics. Who wants to watch somebody ski under their own power, and then stop to shoot a gun? Thats boring enough to do on your own, let alone watch somebody else. I do like the ski jumping events tho.

I think I like the Winter Olympics better than the Summer.

There just seem to be more sports that you don't get a chance to see and the intensity is ramped up to a fever pitch.

Plus it's the only time I'll watch hockey.

I agree on all counts. Especially the hockey, which is actually watchable due to the larger international rinks.

I'm not the biggest fan of the summer olympics...Track & field & gymnastics = boring. Snow sports = exciting. Luge and bobsledding and stuff is sweet too.

I like the skiing events, especially slalom and downhill, bobsled, luge, and hockey.

Ballinest - Have you seen the NHL this year with the new rules? It's a blast to watch.

I'll be watching everything except the ice dancing. Having US guys with a chance in the skiing events is a nice bonus, as well.

I like alot of the big skiing events. How can you not like the craziness of guys like Herman Maier (motto: win or crash) careening down a mountain at 70 MPH?

I wasn't able to find any video on one of my favorite crashes of all time; Herman Maier @ Nagano in the winter olympics '98. If someone was able to find it I would be much obliged!

EDIT-Ok I found the NBC feed of his crash. Still great after all these years! Just click on "1998:Maier's Downhill Crash" in the middle of the webpage.

Bison, I completely agree. When I saw this thread I actually had to ask myself what year it was and then my next thought was that the Olympics must be happening in November or December. I expect in the next month we will see the hype begin.

Ditto here KCF. It's entertaining, and entertaining. At least the women's.

I just read where scientists did a study and found that soccer/futbol is the most exciting spectator sport in the world. I'll see if I can find the link.

EDIT: Here it is:

Soccer 'the most exciting sport'

05.01.06 1.00pm

LONDON - Soccer has been the most exciting sport for the last 100 years, but baseball is catching up.

A team of scientists from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico studied a string of sports to discover which offered the most unpredictable and surprising results -- and soccer was the winner.

Among the great upsets in soccer history are the defeat of Newcastle United by lowly Hereford in the English FA Cup in 1972 and Senegal's defeat of France in the 2002 World Cup.

"If there are no upsets, then every game is predictable and hence boring," Eli Ben-Naim told New Scientist magazine.

He and team members Sidney Redner and Federico Vazquez analysed results from more than 300,000 games over the last century from the US national hockey, football, basketball and baseball leagues and the top English soccer league.

Rugby and cricket were omitted because they do not have a big following in the US.

The results showed that the "upset frequency" was highest for soccer followed by baseball, hockey, basketball and finally American football.

But there was a twist in the tale for soccer fans.

When the team studied data from just the last 10 years, English soccer and American baseball swapped places, suggesting that soccer had become more predictable over the past decade.

I'm not so sure that the changes have been good for the game. Maybe for the league, yes -- bringing the casual fan back -- but as far as the actual game of hockey, it's beginning to look a lot different in a bad way.

Anyways, back on topic..

Winter Olympics > Summer Olympics
(Hockey, bobsledding, skiing, etc. > Swimming, basketball, track and field)

Only scientists could equate exciting with unpredictable. I like watching soccer but there is no way soccer is more exciting than basketball or football. Baseball is definately the most boring to watch of the four.

Big in the media over here. Althouth the Italians really are complaining that they're having trouble selling tickets. I still think most people are planning to watch and also that most of them know quite well the Olympics are happening this year in Italy.

I just had my 50" hdtv plasma installed this week and I am definately looking forward to the winter games. Bring on the hockey it should be very good. The skiing, short track, luge and ski jumping, this should be a fun couple weeks for sure.
