TUCSON--The University of Arizona typically enjoys a robust "walk-up" crowd for home football games -- ticket sales on game day -- but things could be different come September 2nd when the Wildcats play host to Brigham Young in both teams' season opener.

Assistant athletics director James Francis said that entering this week less than 6,000 individual-game tickets remain for the BYU contest. "Normally, we can do that kind of trade on game day. But, it's very unlikely we'll have those tickets left by then this year," he said.

The UA has sold close to 26,000 season tickets to the general public and those sales continue. Plus, the student body has become a solid force in filling 'Zona Zoo' student-section seats. So far, about half the 10,000 Zona Zoo allotment has been sold, with business brisk as classes in the fall semester began yesterday.

About another 800 season tickets sold would help the UA post its second-best season total, eclipsing the 26,672 sold in 1999. The UA's best is 27,779 sold in 1994. Both those years followed Arizona's all-time top records of 10-2 in 1993 and 12-1 in 1998.

"We're really encouraged by the response, and hope would-be patrons will get out and get those remaining BYU tickets before game day," Francis said. It's reasonable to expect the game will be a sellout, he said. The Cats last drew a capacity crowd for a home opener in 56,002-seat Arizona Stadium in 2000, for No. 18 Ohio State. A year ago, 55,728 attended UA's home opener against NAU.

nice! that place will be rocking. wish i could be there.

this is very encouraging to see this type of support from the fan base. this is a complete shift in attitude for the city and fan base. now, lets just get some wins and begin a record string of sellouts!

Its going to be an electric atmosphere for that game. I hope Beck has his hand signals ready because he won't be able to hear a thing.

Are you ready for BYU and some football? Then fill the seats with red and make some noise!! It's time to Rock the house...

Note:
Arizona football has played 429 games in the stadium with a .631 winning percentage. There have been many great games at Arizona Stadium, especially against the in-state rival, Arizona State. A crowd of 59,920 witnessed the Arizona-Arizona State game on Nov. 23 1996. There were four other sellouts (UCLA, Arizona State, Colorado State, California) in 1994 that were close to that record (58,000+).

Is our stadium really that loud? I have always been in the student section so I really can never hear how loud the stadium gets.

it can get pretty loud, being students as we are its hard to tell how loud it gets as about 98% of the noise created in the stadium comes from where we are. i sat on the west side of the stadium during the 2nd half of the ucla game and it got pretty loud.

It can get kinda loud, but it would be 2x as loud if they closed off the north end..Which they probably will do if we sell out a couple years in a row.

Yes, the students did step up last year. But watch any replays of any games for the previous 10 years or so and it was the west side of the stadium that was always full and made all of the noise. In fact, the most disappointing aspect of watching the 2004 replay of the ASU game last weekend was the sparse attendance in the student section. I realize that the game was over thanksgiving weekend, but when I was in school most of the students made sure they made it back for the game.

Now that the team is apparently on to bigger and better things, I expect the entire stadium to be loud and for the students to be in full force for every game. :)

Bearing Down on Remembering The Late 80s and Early 90s Where Packed Houses Were Always Loud And Student Seating Was At A Premium. Time For Arizona Stadium To Get Back To Being What Was Once One of The 3 Toughest Places In The League To Play At (Along With Husky Stadium And The LA Coliseum)

Im hoping that this year I will actually be around more UofA fans/season ticket holders than has been the case the last few years. Im in section 18 and have had to sit around a lot of visitors the last few years wheras it used to be mostly the same faces years ago (aka before Mackovic).
