Dont you think that we should go to a spread offense or go shotgun more often. I think it would fit our team better because our offensive line just cant give tui enough time to get a good throw off without defensive linemen all up in tuitamas grill. Plus our running game is great. But I was impressed with our overall effort from the player they really showed heart. What are your thoughts.

seemed like we went that way for a good part of the game anyways and it really helped to give tui a little extra time and also getting those quick passes off. now if only our rb's were better at picking up the blitz.

Agree 100%. Tui has the arm to do it...

I've ALWAYS been a fan of using the shotgun more, not just for UofA, but for any football team I follow.

Kind of seems like a lost art to me, as most OC's rarely use it.

I also like running the two minute offense with the shotgun throughout the game. Don't let the D get set.

I concur. Spread offense is something we need to employ

but wouldnt having a spread offense require tui to be more mobile and to have at least a fair amount of option/delay plays?

Yes and no. If I can recall, when we played Wisconsin (I think), they spread their offense with a delay to the back. It worked well, but then again, they did have a better O-line than us. It's difficult to tell what can work with our young O-line. Hopefully Canales can become less conservative on his playbook and open up something.

i like the idea of going no huddle. seems like Tui's making adjustments at the line every play. why not go no huddle, speed up the process, and keep the D from making substitutions/ adjustments.

No need to play the spread O. But we should do more 3 step drops, and more plays from shotgun without a doubt. It is ridiculous how until the second half of the USC game that we were still running 5 and 7 step drops. Our O-line sucks, and we have to do everything we can to get the ball out quick, or buy extra time.

You all saw what happened when we did that.

I like the no huddle too. I haven't seen any of it, but it would be nice to know we have it, in case we ever need a TD in a short amount of time. But yeah, it might be good for the entire game too.

Only problem with the no huddle is that the D may only get 5 minutes rest on a 3 and out. But I say go for it, not like the Cats are scoring tons of points.

This offense needs a kick in the pants because "traditional" ground it out is just not going to work. I am all for changing things up and going to a hurry-up spread offense. We cannot get much worse then having negative yards on the opening play almost every time.

This would mean actually playing more than 3 receivers, however, which is something we have been loath to do for some reason. Let's change the pace of this offense. Lute did it in basketball when the 4 out 1 in wasn't working. Stoops needs to do it here.

I am not sure what you call their offensive scheme. It produces a lot of points!

Now if we can just get Coach Stoops and Canales to get on board with it. They need to do something no doubt.

I would love for the Cats to open things up and go shotgun. I think Tui will be able to make his reads better and also see the blitz coming.

I wrote in another thread that the coaches need to get in touch with and consult with some of the old offensive guru's that are still around. One is Darrel "Mouse" Davis currently with Hawaii. He is the father of the run and shoot.

They might also try to get in contact with Don Coryell

These old men could be sent some film/tapes and take a quik look at the team and come up with some interesting suggestions. It could be just a little thing or two or three that the offense is overlooking.

Tuitama's thoughts:

He said he was caught off-guard by the variety of USC's pass-rush techniques - particularly a linebacker-cornerback blitz from his weak side that led to his third sack in the second quarter.

Tuitama suggested the team could start mixing up its play-calling to keep defenses honest.

"When we throw the ball, we move the ball," he said, alluding to long catches by Thomas and fellow receiver Syndric Steptoe. "Maybe instead of trying to let the run game open up the pass, our pass game could open up the run. "(But) I trust the coaches and their schemes. We just got to come out there and do what we can do."

I think that is a great idea, and mentioned something similar about getting someone like Tomey did with Homer Smith.

This is Stoops first position as a HC, and Canales first as an OC. They really need a senior mentor.

Before Arizona had a NFL team, the local affiliates used to show all the SD games since that was the closest NFL team. Air Coryell with Dan Fouts made some fun football to watch.

I'm sure Stoops talks on a regular basis with his brother and with other coaches he has come into contact with or worked with in his rise to his current spot.

As for Canales, I have it on good authority that he talks to Norm Chow at least once a week.

I don't think they need a senior mentor or anyone else looking over their shoulder and disecting their every move. That's what internet message board posters are for.
