7 years, $126 million
Is Zito really worth that kind of contract? 7 years is an awfully long time.

Guess this means Randy stays a Yank? The reports were they were only interested in trading Johnson to enter the Zito chase.
Must not have been much to those reports of a Johnson trade, as if they were serious, then Zito is an idiot for not waiting things out a bit longer and allowing the Yankees to jack up the price even more.

:lol2:
Although Zito's stats may improve via the move to the NL (0.50 runs) plus the low HR rates at ATT park and Petco...although those will be balanced by the high HR rates in Chavez Ravine and Chase Field.
But that is way too much money for Zito in any case.

The Yankees could still trade RJ and go after Clemens.

True... Zito was the name thrown around, but Pettite is a lefty, so they've already replaced Johnson effectively, so it's not like they would simply keep Johnson for sake of him being a lefty.
I really want this trade to happen.

Sabean is grasping at straws now.
Blow it up and rebuild.......I guess it's too late for that.

The baseball anti-christ does it again.
He'll be great in that ballpark though...

The Giants will have a very good starting rotation:
Zito
Cain
Lowry
Morris
Sanchez
The problem will be they won't be able to afford to re-sign their hitters.

This needed to be done, even at this rate Zito isn't that overpaid in a market where Jeff Suppan gets 10.5 M and Gil Meche gets 11M.
I think Zito is going to be great switching to the NL and enjoying the spacious ATT Park. Also, all the NL hitters will have to learn that curveball which I think could take some time.
I didn't think the Giants would be anywhere near competitive without a Zito signing and I think with him they have a chance to do some things with their rotation.
People are also forgetting a guy named Tim Lincecum for the Giants rotation, he was their first round pick last year and completely tore up the minors, Baseball Prospectus had him as a Top 3 Prospect for 2007.

Rotoworld doesn't think this was a good signing. I kind of feel the same way.
According to ESPN's Peter Gammons and The Associated Press, the Giants and Barry Zito have agreed to a seven-year, $126 million contract.
He's getting Vernon Wells money, plus an option year that could make the deal worth $144 million for eight years. Not that they should have gone this high, but Zito would have made a lot more sense on the Mets. The Giants still don't project to have a very good team this year, and the combination of having one of baseball's oldest teams and weakest farm systems suggests things are only going to get worse. The Giants could stay afloat in the post-Barry Bonds era by spending $100 million-$120 million per year, but they're probably not going to build another great team with Brian Sabean at the helm.

Of course Zito is probably getting too much money but I would rather overpay for a guy like Zito then for Gil Meche or Jeff Suppan.

At just over 18 million per year, I like this signing but for 7 years is too long. I just have no idea who is going to hit for the Giants. In this market that is a very fair deal. Obviously, the Giants have the money but I wonder why they can't get a bat to help Barry.

:(
I guess the Mets didn't want to pay near that much.

7yrs-- $126 million vs. 5yrs -- $75 million (a difference of 2yrs and $51 million)
I can't say I blame him  That's a boatload of money.
Can't really blame the Mets either, just a difference of opinion.

Once Barry is gone they won't be making money. Attendance will definitely take a toll. That is why the Diamondbacks are hoping to acquire RJ, he'll bring in the fans.

Nah. The Zito part of that was BS in my opinion. The Yanks can afford to lose a starting pitcher so in all honesty I don't think this effects it at all.
who isnt getting overpaid in mlb?
