wow
LOS ANGELES - Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen, who supports bowl games and opposes a playoff system, told Sporting News Thursday his league will walk away from the BCS if the plus-one playoff model becomes a reality...
Will the Pac-10 walk away from the BCS?
"Yes, no question."

"What's the difference between what we use now and the plus-one? Nothing."
If there really wasn't a difference, Hansen wouldn't be threatening to pull the entire conference out of the BCS.
If you read the whole story, the Rose Bowl committee and the conference's television contract for football seem to have the commish fully by the balls. I don't see what the big deal is as long as the Rose Bowl could agree to be one of the sites to host the plus-one, like before--and the game could be televised on other networks besides Fox.
Sadly, though, this is just another story which further fuels the notion that what keeps the Los Angeles college sports media market happy is what Tom Hansen says is good for the Pac-10.

Everybody who is somebody already knows that when it comes to sports he is a Doofus who lucked his way into a job. What we need to do is put pressure on the University presidents and athletic directors to replace this guy with a more forward thinking person. A web site has already been started:

Doofus: An incompetent, foolish, or stupid person.

This would be very bad for the conference and especially those that compete for a NC every year (USC).

If this came to pass, it seams like SC would split and become an independant in a heartbeat.

OK, so I get the fact that the Rose Bowl is a huge deal. I understand that the PAC 10 and Big 10 would be happier if they could just have their season, have the winners of each conference play in the Rose Bowl and F everyone else.
Seriously, though, why crap on the chance to have a more legitimate national championship for D1 football? This is the first step toward a real playoff system. I love the Cotton Bowl, but the sanctity of that game is not more important that progress towards a real national champion.
Also, would the rest of the PAC 10 stand by him if he walked away from over $100,000,000.00 in BCS money?

How long has Hansen been the commissioner of the PAC 10? It appears the times have passed him. Right, walk away from the BCS with a conference loaded with talented teams and USC, a favorite to win it all again this year. Who does this clown report to anyway?

I think the Pac-10 presidents will go over his head and negotiate a better football TV contract with Fox before they allow Hansen to pull something like this.
Tom Hansen thinks he speaks for the good of the conference. He really doesn't.
Tom Hansen thinks he speaks for the good of the conference. He really doesn't.
Thats what I keep thinking. Who is this ****ing jackass think he is? To have the ability to turn out an entire conference to the possibility of something bigger and better is ludicrous. I can't believe what I'm reading.
I drive by Walnut Creek on the way home every day. If he let this happen, I'd most likely be seeing that city burn.
Can the presidents/AD's really go over his head on this one? Not familiar with rules in these cases.

Cowherd was ripping Hansen this morning, basically calling him every name we've been calling him except f***head. Cowherd said he will ask: If you pull out of the BCS, what's your plan?
Cowherd went through all the scenarios from the Pac-10 becoming the Mountain West, to USC telling the Pac-10 to screw off and going independent if the league pulls out of the BCS.
My hope is that Hansen actually tries to push this, then the school presidents realize what a jackoff he is and they fire him.

For his article! (http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/hansen/194143)
Coincidence? I think not!
What an idiot--the Hansen's are meant for each other.

After reading Hansen's column, I made a number of calls around the league to media types and administrators to find out what the hell Tom Hansen was thinking and why is Greg Hansen defending him. The unanimous opinion was that Tom Hansen is only doing what the league presidents are telling him to do. He has to because they are the ones who hire and fire the league commissioner. When he says the Pac-10 will pull out of the BCS, it's the presidents who are saying the Pac-10 will pull out. They are adamantly opposed to the Plus 1 format.
So may I suggest that future bashing on this issue be aimed at the university presidents.
I still think that Tom Hansen is a weak commissioner from a national standpoint. But this issue apparently is all about the presidents. The presidents have Hansen so wrapped around their finger that he is willing to take the heat on this issue. He hasn't given any indication that he disagrees with them.
My main beef with Tom Hansen regarding football is that our second place team plays in an obscure midweek bowl game instead of playing on New Year's Day like other BCS conferences. I would like to see the Holiday Bowl moved to New Year's Day. Plus we never seem to be able to get our second place team into the BCS. That pisses me off as well.

Hansen is an idiot. You make the call as to whom I am referring.I think that maybe somehow they are related and thats why Arizona Daily star Hansen defends Pac-10 Doofus Hansen. If you had a relative that was slow, wouldn't you help him out or lean to his side?
Also, AZ daily Star Hansen just entrenched my position that Pac-10 Hansen is a Doofus because he writes that Texas and Colorado could have been part of a new conference guaranteeing the Pac-10 a slot in the BCS and additional conference revenues from a championship game even if the U of A wasn't a part of it.
Behind the scenes negotiations 12 YEARS AGO? Sometimes you need to bring things out in the open? A Pac-12 with USC, Colorado, Texas, CAL, UCLA, and others? Who F**ked that deal up? How about adding BYU and Colorado, if Texas was on their period that month and acting B**chy?
Robert Shelton just got here but maybe someone should alert him about the lost revenues from a championship game, entrance fees from two new conference entrants, and revenue form those teams going to bowl games.
Basketball has a championship in the Pac-10. Its time that EVERYONE take a new look at conference expansion. Tom Hanson is just too lazy to deal with it as he awaits his big fat pension check and brags about how long he was able to schmooze with the Pac-10 administrators without really doing anything major since adding Arizona and Arizona state in the 1970's and a championship basketball game.
In the seven years that I have been in Arizona, I have listened to him stand up for the conference once and answer his critics. What a wussy coward. The football coaches have to explain themselves every week.
What would be nice is if Greg Hansen did a fair and BALANCED article about Tom Hansen and not a fluff opinion piece that wasn't so one sided and asked him HARD questions and had comments from his critics. Journalism 101 teaches you to get both sides.
Greg, I'm going to have to give you a C- on your submitted work to the public and I wrote a note on the article to SEE ME as your work lately is not up to what I know you are capable of. You are in danger of failing as a sports reporter. I did see how you ranked Arizona 4th in the Pac-10 preseason poll but I am not sure if you really made that pick or someone in the star sports dept. while you were on vacation.
Since your children are older, I suggest a family in-depth article on Tom C. Hansen and the Pac-10. Where it was, where it is now, and where is it going (expansion)? Include in the article comparisons with other conferences, Pac-10 presidents, television network executives, and Athletic Director opinions, and comments from the fans. Also, include opinions on how far fans are willing to travel to see teams play in Bowls.
After reading that article, I have come to realized that some people in the West are old, out of touch, and small minded thinkers. They then whine when they get little respect and lots of criticism.

In all fairness, the PAC 10 didn't back out of bringing Texas and Colorado on. Texas backed out because the PAC wouldn't take A&M instead of Colorado. The decision was made that breaking up UT and A&M after 100 years would be detrimental to both programs. Shortly after Texas made the demand and the PAC 10 didn't blink, the Big XII was formed. At least that is how it was explained to me.

The better question is why didn't we reconsider taking Texas and Texas A&M and drop Colorado, or take Colorado and Colorado State and Drop Texas? That would have been a better fit with two teams from the same State anyway considering travel concerns the sport teams have, etc.
I think eventually all BCS conferences (or whatever the BCS is called in the future) will be required to have 12 teams and a conference championship game to gain entry into the BCS playoff of eight teams. At some point they may not allow independents anymore and just take conference champs. Notre Dame would complain, but it just means they need to be in a BCS conference in football also.
