Just trying to get a thought of how many of you think he will post year(s) of being considered to be the best/one of the best pitchers in his league. Has to do with the Johan trade of course.

It takes a lot to win a Cy Young. I don't think Curt Schilling has ever won a Cy Young. That said, pitching in NYY (if he does) could help his case in a few years. I gave him 10% chance.

He is 21.
Where was Santana at 21 ?
Boat or box back then I guess ....

Anyway after the Twins trade Hughes to the Red Sox in about 4 years from now he will have maybe a 25% chance.
Hughes favorite childhood team was Boston.

If he stays in NY I'll go 10%. Of course he will have to fight the split votes with Joba. :wink2:

Pitchers are a crapshoot considering how hard it is for them to stay healthy. I'd give him a 1% chance. Hughes is definitely a better pitcher than Santana at the same stage of their careers, but Santana didn't have very good minor league numbers and a lot of pitchers that haver never and will never win a Cy could say the same thing.

The Yankees have had exactly 2 Cy Young award winners in the last 30 years. And that's not because they've had mediocre pitching. It's because the Yankees are the Bronx Bombers and everyone talks about their hitting first and foremost as being the reason for pitchers having success. I think that wins have been (rightfully) devalued recently as a factor in the award in direct response to Yankees starters having good win totals but appearing to be the beneficiaries of stellar hitting.
