Hard to believe so little money raised and that they aren't further along. Today Az recieved a donation of $4.9M (almost half to athletics) along with RJ's $3M which makes this look bad. Hope they finish it for Wooden's sake.

Pauley could have had the money 5 years ago if they wanted.

They don't know whether to tear it down or renovate it. Hopefully they tear her down and build a brand new one. That's what is causing the hold up.

There are of course politics involved.

It is indeed terrible. That place could be much better if the stands were closer to the court, as well.

I don't see how they can do that. They need to tear it down.

No, they don't want a corporate name in front Pauley Pavilion

Was't Pauley a corporate name? Oil company or something.

Edwin W. Pauley made his money in oil, but was also a UC regent and heavy philanthropist for UCLA

Don't put a corporate name on it. Go raise the money. They have only raised $15M since they have been talking about this remodel? That is nothing and an embarrassment. You don't have to sell your soul to a corporation to raise $100M. U of A can get $5M+ in a year without a formal campaign and UCLA can only get $15 after talking about this for years.
The Galen Center isn't named for a Corp.

That may be keeping them from settling on a plan but from raising money? Find that really difficult to believe and if it is true you should fire the person that is responsible for fund raising. Do you believe this will be done for Wooden's 100 birthday?

TheSlowestCat,
They don't even have a MODEL for the new arena. They have barely been soliciting anybody to raise money for the new Pauley because Guerrero has completely bungled the plans. Raising money at UCLA isn't a problem - just look at the buildings all across campus and the recent fund raising campaign by the former Chancellor that was one of the most successful efforts of any University in the nation.

They aren't going to hit Wooden's birthday. Guerrero has mismanaged this project so badly. If Howland didn't love UCLA so much, he'd be in Lexington right now. And Guerrero isn't getting fired anytime soon.

Raising $100 million for one specific project when you aren't willing to give away naming rights is incredibly difficult.

Do you mean that David Geffen wouldn't have given 9 figures to the UCLA school of medicine if they didn't name it the David Geffen School of Medicine? Or how about Mattel's UCLA's Children hospital?

Well I guess the genius's at USC figured it out.
$100M is not terribly difficult over a multi year campaign. UCLA has a large base to draw from. I was really shocked to read this. I thought they were much further along. Maybe because I have read about it for years I just assumed it was closer.

Well you have the U of A Medical Center. The Arizona Heart Institue. Do they have big donors? Damn right but no ones name is on the building.

What are you talking about? The Galens donated $50 million, $25 million specifically for the naming rights.
I know Duke and UCLA are completely different situations, but it was a ***** and a half to get $15 million raised for the Krzyzewski Center; I think fundraising still hasn't been completed and the project has been in the works ever since Coach K threatened to go to the Lakers and is now almost open (don't ask about the financial finagling required to get construction started). There's just no way $100 million would have been done.

I hope you realize it took USC over 30 years to build that arena. They were promising Paul Westphal a new arena back in the 70's.

I was not aware Galen was a corporate name? UCLA has already proven they don't have a problem naming it after a individual like Pauley or Geffin. Those are not corporate names.....
Well AZ has raised approx $7M in two years w/o a formal campaign. RJ gave it $3M, yesterday a donation for $4.9M ($2M for athletics) because Lute made a phone call and $1-2M after an article in the paper about a female basketball player who died.
I have no dog in this fight. I was just really surprised that they don't even have a plan and the big deal was it would be ready for Wooden's 100 birthday. That seems unlikely now.

But they don't have 11 Banners do they......guess it doesn't mean much when you are asking for money. I could stand for JRW living to 130.

Assuming the renovation route is chosen, it already has a name...Pauley Pavilion. You can throw a corporate name in front of that, but if he's paying $50 million, you think a guy like Geffen wants it to be Pauley Pavilion or Geffen Pavilion?

Thecat, what do you want UCLA to do? Pauley Pavilion, while an icon, is a bit outdated. Do we spend even more money to rebuild the whole place? If so, do we not name it Pauley Pavilion anymore? Or do we get less money and renovate it only? You can't just throw away what the Pauley's did for UCLA before in donating the money for Pauley Pavilion. And calling it The American Express Center at Pauley Pavilion is stupid and takes away part of what it is, Pauley Pavilion.
It's also assumed that hiring Rick was to appease some of the bigger donors to kick in some extra money for the project.
