Let's take a look at how superior the Texas Tech football program is over the last twenty years. Are we really a step down?
2002 Record : 9-5
2001 Record : 7-5 (barely over .500! That's prestige!)
2000 Record : 7-6 (even closer to barely over .500! Prestige!)
1999 Record : 6-5 (are we seeing a pattern here? Prestige!)
1998 Record : 7-5 (Wow, barely over 500 again! Prestige!)
1997 Record : 6-5 (Did I mention barely over 500?)
1996 Record : 7-5 (Sixth time in six years you barely beat .500)
1995 Record : 9-3 (Wow, what happened?)
1994 Record : 6-6 (You did it! You hit .500)
1993 Record : 6-6 (Two straight at .500)
1992 Record : 5-6 (Not .500 this year)
1991 Record : 6-5 (Barely)
1990 Record : 4-7 (Makes 1989 seem like a fluke)
1989 Record : 9-3 (Told ya)
1988 Record : 5-6 (Where does 9-3 fit in between two horrible teams?)
1987 Record : 6-4-1 (Wow, if ties were losses, you'd barely hit .500 again)
1986 Record : 7-5 (Barely over .500, again)
1985 Record : 4-7 (Heh.)
1984 Record : 4-7 (Deja Vu)
1983 Record : 3-7-1 (Even worse)
So, schools don't have horrible streaks over a course of years? I proved that all schools have down years. Now, lets look at our beloved Cats over the last twenty years:
2002 Record : 4-8 (Clearly, our down years.)
2001 Record : 5-6 (Pretty good, considering Arizona had all Tomey recruits)
2000 Record : 5-6 (Dick Tomey's final year)
1999 Record : 6-6 (.500)
1998 Record : 12-1 (#4 in the nation. How high has Texas Tech been ranked at the end of the season?)
1997 Record : 7-5 (Barely over .500)
1996 Record : 5-6 (Barely under .500)
1995 Record : 6-5 (Barely over .500)
1994 Record : 8-4 (SI Jinx hit us. We still finished better than a 6-6 team out of Lubbock, Texas)
1993 Record : 10-2 (Beating Miami in the Fiesta was sweet)
1992 Record : 6-5-1 (Barely over .500)
1991 Record : 4-7 (Down year for our program)
1990 Record : 7-5
1989 Record : 8-4
1988 Record : 7-4
1987 Record : 4-4-3 (Sounds like a defensive scheme... Tomey's first year)
1986 Record : 9-3 (Benedict Arnold left for USC)
1985 Record : 8-3-1
1984 Record : 7-4
1983 Record : 7-3-1
Now over the last twenty years, that gives Texas Tech a .527 winning percentage. Like I said, better than mediocre. Our twenty year winning percentage is .581. Is Arizona really a step down?
Over the last ten years, Tech has had a .588 to Arizona's .581. I want you to admit that Arizona isn't a step down now. A winning percentage of .007 isn't a step down to any rational non-biased person.
When I see Texas Tech contend for a Big 12 championship, I'll consider that they are legit. Until they can beat a majority of the Big 12 juggernauts, they're just a middle of the pack team.
