UNC's struggles

What the heck is going on over there, losing 78-58 to VaTech on the road?

This is a squad with 7-8 Mickey D's on the roster, CURRENTLY. I mean, come on, it can't be because the Wears transferred out.

Where's OE been lately? Maybe he can shed some light to this.

Thankfully UCLA isnt the biggest underachieving school right now, just the second.

I said it last year and I got chewed out for it, but Roy is over rated as a coach. Can't handle criticism at all.

Have to agree but the answer seems to be nebulus. Roy's a smart guy and he can't get it figured out. Like many have said, it makes Lute's 25 years just that much more unbelieveable.

They actually lost to GT who's awful. I watched the game and they have talent I have no clue what the issue is.

Lack of motivation, maybe?

Elite programs can churn out rosterfuls of players who were 4/5-star recruits out of HS who just were not willing to commit the time and work it takes to excel in D-1 college ball.

See Arizona's list alone: Etdrick Bohannon, Dion Broom, Dennis Latimore, Chris Rodgers, Jeff Withey ad nauseum.

Also, when a coach makes exception to his successful system just for one star player, underclassmen take notice and may expect the same treatment down the road. When they don't get it, there can be leadership problems.

This is what IMHO happened at Florida after Noah and Horford left. Too many guys came in expecting the same treatment and really didn't respond well at all when they didn't get it from Billy Donovan (Is there any active college basketball coach whose star has risen and fallen faster?)

Same reason why a lot of underachieving teams don't live up to their potential: ****ty point guard play.

Spot on. Also, they might be better if just one of their heralded recruits lived up to the hype.

Over the last 10-15 years I think he has won more games then any other coach....hard to overrate someone with that resume. It isn't like he ducks folks either......

I think he is a top 3 coach.....

I don't think UCLA is really underachieving that much at all this year; remember what kind of team UCLA was last year. They've significantly better in 2010, have a "signature win" against BYU and still have a pretty decent chance in playing in March. What exactly did you expect out of them this year?

Harrison Barnes thus far has to be one of the biggest freshman disappointments for a McDs AA since... Abdul Gaddy?

Agree on UCLA (just too young right now), prolly a year away from being a real factor. If they still struggle next year, then all bets are off.

Plenty of disappointing Mickey D's, but HB was supposed to be this year's CAN'T MISS recruit, a la Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, John Wall, etc, etc.

Exactly. I remember seeing some draft experts saying if he'd gone straight to the NBA out of HS that he would have been the consensus #1 overall pick.

I think UCLA will have a real strong team next year and get back to normal UCLA competitiveness assuming there aren't any unexpected departures after this season and if Josh Smith can lose another 20 or so pounds. If Howland could land a big-time "can't miss" recruit in the next year or so that would certainly help UCLA get back to where they should be.

Don't know if a "can't miss" recruit is the answer. Not too convinced that KLuv and Jrue Holiday types were worth it for the program. I definitely prefer the 3-year player types like Afflalo, Moute, Collison, etc. We were able to go to 2 FF's before KLuv ever set foot in Westwood, as an example.

What we need is basically a productive, efficient point guard, one that will run the plays, and not turn it over too much.

The biggest downer for UCLA this season is really too much turnovers, due to sloppy guard play. If we can just get it down to about 12 turnovers a game, we would have won at least 2-3 more games, and looking more confident for the stretch run.
