The Cardinals have reached an agreement on a five-year contract with defensive end Calais Campbell, the fourth significant "core" player they have re-signed over the last three years. The others are Adrian Wilson, Darnell Dockett and Larry Fitzgerald.

Financial terms for Campbell's new contract aren't available yet, but I expect them to be huge. I always try to use caution, however, when interpreting initial figures. Most often, those numbers are at the high range of the possibilities. Once the actual contract becomes available, we all can provide more perspective about the financial ramifications.

As the team's franchise player, Campbell had a $10.7 million cap figure. That likely will be lower under the new contract, freeing space for the team to accomplish other things. Like maybe re-sign veterans Clark Haggans and Vonnie Holliday. We'll see.

This is a positive sign for the Cardinals and their fans. Campbell is only 25 and enjoyed his finest season last year. He had eight sacks, three blocked field goals and defended 11 passes. That final stat is stunning. It also is a plus that the situation didn't become protracted as it did with linebacker Karlos Dansby, who eventually departed for the Dolphins.

This deal keeps Campbell with the team through the prime of his career. Campbell has earned a reputation has a relentless worker, and the Cardinals obviously feel big money isn't going to change him.
