Help me out here.

Everyone and their dog figures Gonzaga to be a 6 or 7 seed (even after yesterday's debacle). Most figure Utah State to be about a 10 seed if they win the WAC, and a bubble team if they don't.

I can't think of any logical reason to rank Gonzaga that far ahead of Utah State right now. Their profiles seem pretty even to me.

This was explained by the talking heads. Think Gary Parrish was one. Utah State won't play anyone unless they promise a home and home. Therefore, their schedule is nowhere near that of Gonzaga.

Yet their SOS, by most measures, is better than Gonzaga's. I need a better argument than that.

Depends on what you look at Real Time RPI has their power rating much lower than the Zags.

No one can speak for the mentality of the committee, but I kind of think those that are doing the guessing have a similar mindset. Maybe historical performance in the tourney? Who knows.

I know the committee uses RPI less than they used to, but I think they still use the RPI's calculation to determine SOS. RealtimeRPI.com has USU at #103 SOS and Gonzaga at #111.

Well, at least UConn is (finally) out of the picture.

I know what you were referring to, and I guarantee that the committee doesn't know or care about those numbers.

A more respected metric is the Pomeroy ranking, for which USU is ahead of Gonzaga by 30 places.

Actually according to the mock committee the Pomeroy never is even considered.

PLUS, bottom line? Whatever is out there now is the selection of people who don't do it for all the donuts.

None of these external metrics are considered. I was just giving one example that countered yours.

The SOS is considered. It is very highly considered. The committee doesn't use Pomeroy's SOS or realtimerpi's SOS or Sagarin's or any of those. They use the RPI's SOS. Which prefers USU over Gonzaga.

Possibly, probably.
However I understood from someone who has gone through the mock selection, they do use the RPI, just not the Pomeroy.
Look at the 1-5 projected seeds in each region Their SOS isn't as good as some others but their RPI is higher and they are projected as higher seeds. Heck if it was SOS Cal would be a shoe-in as a high seed.

Too true.
There really isn't too much reasoning behind a lot of the selections and seedings. The uproar about us last year, ASU whining about it two years ago.

All the predictions are speculation based on their best guess, using the criteria the committee uses.
Who knows why some teams become the 'darlings'?????
