Rules Question...

This has probably been discussed before, but after seeing it happen last night I thought I would get some takes on what you guys think...

If a team is flagged for having 12 men on the field, it is a 5 yard penalty. Thats it. With 17 seconds left last night, the Giants were flagged for having 12 men on the field. The pass was incomplete, and more importantly 9 seconds came off the clock. The Pats moved 5 yards up and had 8 seconds to heave up a prayer.

Why wouldnt the time be put back on the clock? Is it worth the 5 yard penalty in that situation in order to eat some time? I would think so.

This has always baffled me...

They need to change that rule. I would have kept 12 players on for another play.

Yeah - that rule hugely benefited the team that committed the infraction.

I remember the play in the ASsU UA game where the ASsU player threw the ball Out of Bounce and got a free timeout.

College and NFL need to work on their timing rules for penalties in the last few (I dont know if it should be five minutes or two minutes) of the half.

Screw 12. I'd put 15 on the field up until there was time for just one play.

The minute I saw it I thought that Coughlin must have done it on purpose to take time off the clock, knowing that the penalty didn't reward the Pats another first down with its opportunity to spike the ball. Since a FG was not an option, range was not important. Smart move by the Giants but that rule needs to be changed.

It should be a 10 second penalty. If a false start under two minutes can result in a 10 second runoff, then a defensive 12-man call should net 5 yards, replay down and have 10 seconds added if the penalty is accepted. This allows for the Patriots to make a play downfield and decline if they so choose.

Don't forget the game can't end on a defensive penalty, so a D can only do it when there's sufficient time on the clock.

They shouldn't be allowed to do it, regardless. The offense should, at the least, have the option to make it as if the play never happened. Don't automatically kill the play, but, give the offense the option to let the play stand or redo it all, plus a yardage penalty, resetting down and time to prior, if not adding more time on.

Serious question. The penalty is called '12 men on the field'. Is the penalty the same for 13, 14, 15.....?

Let's say you have time for 2 plays.....like 10-12 seconds on the clock, and your opponent is at midfield (or further) from the goal line. Throw 15 guys out there and make it damn near impossible for them to do anything on the first play. Take your five yard penalty and go back to 11 guys for the final hail mary.

And just as I am getting ready to post I find this:

Doug and Wolf (Local PHX radio) were talking about this yesterday afternoon. Wolfley was pretty adament that there would be a new rule in place next year. said the league is looking at some options.

Will be interesting to see what they come up with..

Intentionally throwing 15 guys on the field would be a clear violation of the Palpably Unfair Act which literally says the refs can do whatever they want if you try to do something that is obviously unfair. In theory they could award the other team as many yards as they want or even grant them a score. Of course whether or not a ref would have the balls to do that is another question.
