Great ideas. Shame it has to come from the man Stern goes out of his way to undermine.

The problem with all of that is the D-league. Nobody is going to "want" to play in the D-League until they do something about their pay.

It sounds good, but its not going to come close to happening.

I agree with GoCats! that the D-League is as much an issue as anything. No one watches, either in person or on TV, and it's just different asking communities to support minor league baseball in the summer than to support minor league basketball in the winter, even as it's an indoor sport.

I'd be fine with 2 years, approximating that junior college timeline, which is what Stern should have pushed for, but Cuban's D-League proposal (allowing high schoolers to play for 3 years there) isn't wholly compatible with his expanded NBA Draft proposal (4 rounds worth of players will only crowd the D-League further for those HS players skipping college). Seems it would make more sense to allow these HS players to be drafted, then go to the D-League, and then require those HS players who do go to college to remain there for 2 years. Of course, that puts NBA scouts into HS and AAU gyms again, and only exacerbates the agent problems, which no one really wants.

Maybe a secondary D-League draft for kids who aren't eligible for the NBA draft under a new early entry structure would help alleviate some of those problems. Cubes is generally correct on the larger issue.

The NBA isn't selling basketball to future players, they're selling Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. That's the quandary with a star-driven league. The NBA is going to have to make the D-league more alluring than it currently is with higher salaries (and higher base salaries than minor league baseball or hockey) if they ever change the early entry rules, but not so alluring that it severely hinders CBB even further (current average D-League salary is $35K, which is ~3x that of AAA baseball players not on their MLB Team's 40-day roster).

One easy way to do that would be to cancel the WNBA (who also make more in salary than D-Leaguers do).

This thread is reason enough why I think the NBA should go die in a fire.

A D-League as a minor league for basketball could hurt college basketball immensely.

I also like the idea of letting kids straight into NBA outta high school (or D League) but if they go to college, then 2 or 3 years before they are draft eligible. The problem is that kids that have no business being in college are forced there for a year. Then the NCAA penalizes schools for taking the kids because of graduation rates. Makes no sense.

The issue is that a much higher percentage of NBA players are ready right out of HS. Look at the guys who came straight out of HS and succeeded. Kobe, KG, Tmac, Dwight, LeBron, all were contributors immediately. You don't see MLB players contributing in the majors 4 months out of HS. It's why the NFL can have such a hard and fast rule. Kids can't contribute straight out of HS.

To some extent, all sports are market driven. Basketball has a market for younger talent that's unparalleled in US major pro sports. The only real comparison is international soccer. As long as that is the case, and the D league is horrible in terms of competition and pay, all Cuban's doing is making the college game dirtier than it already is.

No HS player in his right mind is choosing the D league over college. If top talent with no interest in school gets forced to spend three years, this only makes the Worldwide Wes's more powerful.

Good point is there a correlation between a good minor league system (baseball, hockey) and poor college revenue?

vs a bad minor league system (football, basketball)? Also may be the case that basketball and football players go stale quicker and baseball players (dont know enough about hockey) can age like a fine cheese.

This post is a reflection of the problem at the heart of college basketball. A D-League minor league will hurt the $$ that coaches and athletic departments make at universities make.

Some of the current profile, TV revenue and sponsorship $$ will follow the players to the D-League. But the competitiveness of college basketball will go unchanged. The Final 4 will still be the Final 4. The balance of power might even out with fewer sure-fire superstar players available to flock to the super power schools.

I think the NCAA would agree that it would hurt CBB immensely, because they are looking at it from a $$ standpoint. But I don't look at it that way. I root for my school, not for the players on my schools team.

If the talent level of all of CBB drops, I'm ok with that as long as Arizona continues to compete at a high level with the rest of the players left.
