Ranking the Pac 12 QB's

Wonder if Matt Scott saw this? Athlon ranked the QB's for the upcoming pac 12 season and list Scott as the 10th best QB in the conference. Not sure that I would have ntOSU, Cal, Stanford (who hasn't even played yet), Utah, and ucla (Is Prince even the starter?) ahead of Scott.

Just shows lack of knowledge and research. They probably just remember his terrible freshman season.

The Iowa game must have been the only thing this guy has seen of Scott.

Agree. Reading the comments section - Prince is not even close to being the starter. Maynard from Cal is horrible. Wynn is as big of a question mark as there is in the conference.

Athlon did the rankings not espn. The Pac 12 blog will come out with their rankings on Friday. I would guess that they would have Scott top 6.

I would put Scott right now ahead of Prince, Maynard and Nottingham. I think if Wynn comes back healthy, I don't have a problem putting him ahead of Scott, which leaves Scott ~ 7th, with the chance to move up to 4th at his best, as I don't think he'll be better than Barkley, Price or Tuel.

I would be surprised if Scott was Top 6. I dont think he is a bottom 2 or 3 QB, but I dont think he's an upper half QB.

But what are the measurables? If you are going to go off of throwing stats, I would venture a guess that Scott certainly would be near the bottom of passing among non-injured starters. Winning percentage? Too hard to tell, but I doubt Arizona finishes in the top 6 of teams in the PAC-12.

We pretty much agree on the bottom line - 7th isn't a Top 6 QB.

I get why he's ranked so low by Athlon, the accumulated numbers don't favor him. But, two seasons ago he looked pretty good against UW and UCLA in back-up duty and went 2-0. Meanwhile, I think everyone should have been able to see enough of Prince and Maynard to know they are subpar QBs, so ranking them ahead Scott is a complete joke. Also, Nottingham has played much less than Scott, yet he's above him? Why? Just because he's at Stanford? Maybe he proves them right, but before the season with almost no game experience to go on? That's just as silly.

Well, I dont think Prince will be a starter. I think Mayard will actually have a good season this year.

Doesnt Athlon pride itself on being the first magazine out anyways?

Agree on Prince, although I couldn't rank whoever emerges at UCLA ahead of Scott to begin the season for the same reasons as Nottingham. I disagree on Maynard, he sucks.

According to the blog - Athlon used the following measurables:

In compiling their rankings, they took into account 2011 numbers, the sort of personnel returning in 2012 and how each quarterback is expected to perform.

Scott didn't have any 2011 numbers but that would be true for half the guys listed. Why would Scott be near the bottom for passing? Why would Arizona not finish top 6? Seriously?

Everybody has warts but Arizona having it's entire OL back and a 5th yr senior at QB along with talent at the skill positions is in better shape than most in the conference.

As for top 6 - besides SC nobody in the south scares me. Lets see how Utah does facing UA's spread offense? They haven't played Oregon and won't again TY so this will be the first time they face a read option fast paced team.

Utah's biggest problem in facing Arizona is the same as facing oregon and that is you can't duplicate the pace in practice.

I won't argue the merits of half the guys listed, but Matt Scott also has that backup vibe to him. Beating a bad UCLA and UW team doesnt exactly mean he's a great QB, like his lost makes him a terrible QB either.

I don't think Arizona not finishing in the top 6 is a stretch, do you?

I won't doubt Utah's coaching ability, I'll give you Colorado, especially since Paul Richardson is out for the year. ASU, you can have. I'd say you probably have better skill positions than CU, Oregon State, ASU, and possibly WSU, but their WR's are going to light it up, so "better" is subjective at that point.

Kevin Prince is a 5th year QB and has a much better resume than Matt Scott does, so forgive me if I don't buy the 5th year QB thing. Isn't Maynard a 5th year QB too?

To be honest, your assessment isn't off here, but if you go to every message board in the south and they are saying the exact same thing about the other four teams in the PAC-12.
