If Holtz couldn't revive the gamecocks, how will Spurrier?

"Revive" implies they were good at some point in the past.

I think he will do very well there. They have boosters with deep pockets who will really open those wallets now. Expect to see some "verbals" changing over the next few months. He has PLENTY of time to pull in a big time class.
Their attendence is good, they have the money for facilities and now they have a big name coach who has a grudge against football (after the Skins debacle) and the SEC (if what is said about Florida's President is true). DC Cat |

I agree, every SEC coach down in the deep south will be calling all their offensive skill position recruits this week to remind them how much they love them. Spurrier still has time to pull together a recruiting coup before February. Paging Fred Rouse and Patrick Turner........

I think Spurrier will be in for a rude awakening in the SEC. His old offense has been dissected and copied so it will not be as effective. Teams in the SEC have all gotten much, much better. He will not win right away like many seem to think will happen. If Florida get Urban Meyer, then it could be a long season for the rest of the SEC. Florida is loaded with potential stars. If my memory serves me correctly I believe recruiting was not Spurrier's strong suit. He is more interested in golf than trying to get a recruit to come to Columbia.

Spurrier didn't have to recruit, the program recruited itself.

Well, if recruiting wasn't his strong suit....then finding good assistants who could recruit was. And I think the golf thing is overdone just a bit. Spurrier knows how to win and he knows what it takes to win....and best of all, he knows how to win in the SEC.
I think he will have them challenging in year two. Spurrier ALWAYS put up points, no matter how comfortable teams became with his offense. In the pros, coaches have to move around to keep their gameplan fresh (as Parcells has admitted a couple of times) but in college, if you can put up 50 and give up 40 your golden. DC Cat |

What will he have them challenging for in a year or two? Please don't say a National Championship. I must admit I don't like Spurrier. I do think he is a good coach though.
I honestly believe people overestimate his coaching ability. It is certainly easier to recruit to Florida than to South Carolina. Believe me I lived in Columbia for 3 years not exactly a cosmopolitan city. Florida as a program is definitely easier to recruit to. Look what Zook did in his 2+ years on the job. Ciao |

I actually liked South Carolina's team a lot this year. I think losing that tight one to GA at the beginning of the year took a lot out of them. There is a very good deal of talent, and a lot of that will remain there next season for Spurrier. I promise you in terms of ability, you will not find a better young offensive tandem at skill positions in America than Demetris Summers and Syvelle Newton.
This is a school with an 85,000 person stadium which sells out every game. Its a football school first and foremost, always has been, and always will be. Its a perfect situation for Spurrier, and I expect him to be wildly successful there.

That is one of the main reasons I think he will be successful there....the cupboard is NOT bare. And as dill said up above, there are some very TENSE coaches in the SEC right now who might be getting a busy signal when checking in on their top verbals.

If Spurrier can win at Duke, he'll win at South Carolina. I think they'll be a top 25 team in 2-3 years.
