Why wasn't that hit on the punt return a penalty?

The return where we knocked out the BYU return man.

It looked like our defender hit the return man a full second before the ball ever got there. I know he didn't call fair catch, but the defender has to give the return man a 1 yard bubble to catch the ball, right? He surely didn't have that.

He was crushed before the ball even got there. Or at least that's how it looked to me at the stadium.

At least our video team wasn't stupid enough to show the replay on the video board. And even more impressively, they weren't stupid enough to make that play the "huge hit of the game" sponsored by 911 Collision. That would have been a VERY bad idea.

The best I understand the rule, our player was being blocked and still in contact with the blocker when the contact was made, so no penality. However I think it was a purposful hit and probably should have cost us 15, maybe that makes up for the many missed blocks in the back on punt returns and a couple of PIs that were not called,,,but daym, that was a wicked hit, glad the young man is OK.

Pushed in what way? Pushed him into the return guy? That hit was *hard*. Certainly not the result of a push from one of their guys.

If it was a call of a penalty on BYU's part (if that's what you mean by "called that a byu player pushed our guy")... then wouldn't that have at least been off-setting penalties and rekick?

It seems that with their call, they didn't find any fault with us on that play... and I don't see how that's possible unless it was completely blow. And with review, I'm not sure it's likely that it was *completely* blown.

So I'm assuming that there's something that I missed entirely.

Otherwise, BYU fan has reason to be pissed.

I guess explained that way makes sense. It does seem like at the very least it should have been offsetting penalties in that situation.

The official ruling - player was blocked into the receiver. He was.

Another ruling could have been made that the 'fair catch' was called too late (inside of 5 yards), and it was (too late).

Fact is, Patrick was already off his feet when the PR called for the fair catch. Per the rule book, the PR was an idiot. He had ample time to call for a 'fair catch', and didn't.

Right call at the right time, just hope that Dominic doesn't become a headhunter.

You don't want it to become a dirty thing (and it isn't to this point) . . . but last night he was the most devastating tackler I've seen on an Arizona team in a long time.

Ok here are my thoughts on it and I argued with somebody next to me but he agreed in the end I was right..

The BYU played called the fair catch much, much too late. However, since he called it, he ran up and the ball went over his head. At that point he became a blocker, thus he was fair game. Patrick saw the opportunity and took the hit and in my opinion there was nothing dirty or illegal about it. It was a guy that loves to hit making the hit.

By the rule book, its just fine to have someone come and clean your punters clock after he punts the ball and takes a couple of steps down field, just because there isnt a rule dosnt make it right. It was an awesome hit, just not a good one.

I don't think Patrick was trying to hurt him, but rather saw an opportunity and maybe got a little too excited and took it.

Patrick has always been a massive hitter, he doesnt care about situation... He is ruthless more so than Darrell Brooks and Lamon Means combined...

The play was called right by the officials, it didnt break rules so it was an awesome hit...

Also there is no longer a halo rule in college football, a rule i thought theyd change again because it is very dangerous but... they havent changed it...

It was Nelson

and he was clearly pushed from behind into the PR. If anything a block from behind should have been called. Not that Nelson held up on leveling the PR who did signal for the fair catch late.

1. The punt returner signaled very late
2. Nelson was pushed, not hard, but was pushed as he was flying towards the returner
3. Nelson didn't make the best attempt to get out of the way

Recipe for a collision.

Replays showed that it was NOT a dirty hit by any means by Nelson and that he was blocked into the return man.

Bearing Down on The Dynamics of That Play Leading To A Very Hard Hit, But Nothing Done Was Either Dirty or Illegal
