Good Read on College Hoops Dynasties

It's mainly about UCLA, but a nice column nonetheless.

Bill Frieder, who coached at Michigan and Arizona State, said people generally don't understand how tough it is "to stay in the top five or 10 for 10 years."

How the heck would he know that?

Actually, unless I'm mistaken, Frieder did okay at Michigan. ASU is a different story.

The closest we've seen to a dynasty in the past 25 years has been Duke of the late 80s and early 90s. Duke still maintains their spot as one of the elite programs in the nation, but even the mighty Blue Devils are vulnerable to the occasional "down year," as we're seeing with them this season.

Players leaving early for the NBA has to be one of the biggest reasons that it's become so difficult for a program to dominate the way UCLA did in the 70s and the way Duke has more recently.

Just think of all the stars Arizona's had through the years who left early: RJ, Arenas, Iggy, Bibby, and I'd even throw in Ndudi Ebi. Ebi was poised to become a major contributor for Arizona from day one, and I'm convinced he would have. If Ebi and some of these others had played full careers at Arizona, who knows how many conference titles or FFs Lute might have had?

Same goes for Duke and UNC and any other team that routinely loses players early to the NBA.
