Boise state even assuming they are ready for pac ten or any major conference is a joke. Look BSU has a good tradition but here is a fact while BSU hides in thd WAC, Utah plays BYU and AF and TCU. Its easy to put your all or get up for 3 games a year and sit on cruise control the rest of the season and whine about the BCS. Does anyone other than BSU fans believe if they had to play USC, Cal, Oregon and UA on consecutive weeks they would be undefeated? The reason I like Utah is because they earn that BCS berth and deserve a shot to be in one of the power conferences. The MWC has some good programs. BSU has to prove they can win the MWC before claiming they should be in the pac.

Academically, CU might match Stanford, but USC and Oregon State? According to a highly placed CU source, the school relaxed its qualifying standards to allow running back Darrell Scott to enroll, and one of the reasons he departed was "because he had troubles handling" the academics.

The University of Texas likes its position in the Big 12 Conference and hasn't talked with the Big Ten about expansion plans for that league.

Athletic director DeLoss Dodds tells The Associated Press that Texas and the Big 12 are good for each other, adding "It's working. I like it."

There has been speculation the Longhorns program could be courted by the Big Ten, which is considering expansion. Dodds said Wednesday that Texas would be a natural target for any league because of the school's strong academics, athletics and the power to draw a large television audience.

So... That means that the Pac10 is now the front runner for Texas' services

I’ve spent a bit of time the past few weeks talking to folks inside and outside the league about expansion, which became a sizzling topic when commissioner Larry Scott said he was looking at it “very seriously.”

Before addressing the specifics, three quick points: 1) Everyone agrees it’s an extremely complicated issue, 2) No one knows how it will turn out, and 3) Everyone is skeptical.

That said, here’s what I’ve learned:

* To say that the soul of the Pac-10 is at stake would be an overstatement — but not by much.

The presidents are aware of the huge difference in revenue between the Pac-10 and Big Ten/SEC (more below) and have dollar signs in their eyes. “Everything is for sale,” one source told me. “They’ll do anything necessary to make money.’


This doesn’t guarantee that everything will be for sale when/if the presidents ultimately sit down (as a group) to vote on expansion.

But they’ve made it very, very clear to Scott that they want more money — and they want him to lay out the options for generating more money. After all, that’s what he was hired to do.

And if Scott comes back to them in six or nine months and says, “I can get each school X million more dollars annually, but you’ll have to play basketball games every night of the week and football games on Thursday,” … if Scott says that, the presidents just might do it — even if it cuts into class time.

For decades, the Pac-10 viewed itself (rightly or wrongly) as being on higher moral and ethical ground than the SEC and Big 12, for instance. Certainly, it viewed itself as more committed to academics than those conferences.

But if the dollars are right, I’ve been told, we might see an entirely different approach.

“There will be no moral high ground if it can be monetized,” the source said.

Good. They seem to be focused on how much they can expand the $$$ per team per year. Unless you can get a good bump up in that figure, expansion is pointless.

My guess is when it gets looked at this way, things like UTAH/BYU drops out of consideration and one of the few ways this $/team/year figure significantly expands is to find a way to lure Texas.
